Yeah, and I wouldn't want that to happen either, as much as I have come to hate them. They are "beautiful" animals when I see them walking around, as much as I despise them at this point. If they thin them out, the remaining ones will be much more healthy. It has become almost an epidemic in my neighborhood, we have never been so infested by deer, and there is not enough food to go around for them. And it's even worse in other parts of Long Island. |

But that is not true. Where I live used to be farmland, and I know people that have been here over 50 years....and there were never deer around here until about 15 years ago. It's because a lot of the farmland has become wooded that they began to move in. |

Ours were VERY healthy until this year. But then again like down your way, the occasional one or two at a time gave way to dozens all crowded in herds. And around here, it can't be blamed on development as there hasn't been any which would have affected migratory patterns. Every year, two of our regulars gave birth to twins. That's how healthy they were. Not anymore.I think they need some guards on the Port Jeff ferry. I suspect there be fare evaders coming across in the night. :) |

I guess they are migrating from the east to the west as their populations expand. There are massive amounts of virgin forest on Longisland in it's central core from Medford east, and we have large preserves on the South Shore in Brookhaven and Shirley, and then east, so they have come out of those areas as their populations explode, and moved into areas they never were, even when Long Island was more rural years back. Fire Island is also INFESTED with them from what I hear. They have it even worse than we do here. There's still lots of large areas of wooded land on Long Island. And it's not just Suffolk. I heard they are starting to get them in Nassau now too....even in "suburban sprawl" areas like Massapequa. And of course Nassau's north shore is also very wooded.Long Deerland..... |

Don't even open it (although the weather may be on the last page). It's tougher on Friday, because sports usually shares a section with business, iinm. So that section hangs around a bit longer. See the NYT subscription commercial? "I'm fluent in x number of sections." They could deep-six the sports section and I would never miss it. |
