That is such an incorrect statement in light of the Parade. Lets not forget the countless of men and women who's military career have ended for the Freedom of Speech. No free country there..buddy....or lets not forget a young man in Brooklyn who was killed at night walking down the street with his brother arm in arm just because some group of "nice guys" thought they were gay. Not a free country there either. |

Posted by streetcarman1 on Wed Jul 1 13:57:30 2009, in response to Re: On Parade, posted by JayZeeBMT on Tue Jun 30 23:46:21 2009. I have nothing against the March per say, just that the media tends to zoom in on guys in their "extreme costumes" that the so-called "middle-America" gets a picture and views this as your typical gay man. I mean for Americans who don't know a gay person, they don't what to expect then. Being gay can go from mild to wild, but showing the wild side puts a dent in others who are forming "bridges" in American society is saying "we are just like anyone else in your community-at-large.....we could be anyone..." |

Posted by JayZeeBMT on Wed Jul 1 14:42:09 2009, in response to Re: On Parade, posted by streetcarman1 on Wed Jul 1 13:57:30 2009. You're right, the media does tend to focus on the extravagant, flamboyant, and just plain fabulous costumes of the March, and often ignores the other puropses of the March. I marched to reaffirm my statement that LGBT rights are long overdue, and that gay and lesbioans are NOT second-class citizens. I thought that by joining my friends of the NYC Council in a highly visible public presence at the March, it might call attention to the important issues like gay marriage, ENDA, DADT, gay-bashing attacks, and the ongoing criminalization of homosexuality here and around the world. But the March is meant to include all aspects of the LGBT community, and I agree with that thinking. The colorful, revealing costumes can reinforce negative stereotypes about us, but you know what? People who judge us as a group based on a few images taken at an event inteded to showcase the entire LGBT spectrum, aren't going to hear us on the more sober issues anyway. |

I was saying that the Pride March shows all of the LGBT community, from the flamboyant to the political.
