You're right, the media does tend to focus on the extravagant, flamboyant, and just plain fabulous costumes of the March, and often ignores the other puropses of the March. I marched to reaffirm my statement that LGBT rights are long overdue, and that gay and lesbioans are NOT second-class citizens. I thought that by joining my friends of the NYC Council in a highly visible public presence at the March, it might call attention to the important issues like gay marriage, ENDA, DADT, gay-bashing attacks, and the ongoing criminalization of homosexuality here and around the world. But the March is meant to include all aspects of the LGBT community, and I agree with that thinking. The colorful, revealing costumes can reinforce negative stereotypes about us, but you know what? People who judge us as a group based on a few images taken at an event inteded to showcase the entire LGBT spectrum, aren't going to hear us on the more sober issues anyway. |
