Bill, then I'll offer you the same advice I offered Luch. Cowboy up, have a few drinks before you board and you'll get to Chicago in a little more than 2 hours. :-)Enjoy your week off. See you on the 29th. |

My fear of flying has more to do with the catastrophic nature of most crashes although I saw on CNN last night that 96% of people in plane crashes survive. I'm guessing that's not using the same definition of "plane crash" that I would.I did once date a girl whose father survived two plane crashes. He traveled very frequently all over the world and as far as I know never developed a fear of flying. Both crashes were crash landings involving damage to the plane and people were killed in at least one of the crashes that he was in. |

But you have to look at the number of people who drive compared to fly. 18,000 commercial flights a day in the US, compared to millions on the road.Statisticians always like to downplay the probability of dying in a plane crash. I think they divide the number of deaths by the number of people who fly. It should be the number of deaths by flights, which is more accurate. |

I posted that recently.Commercial plane and bus 0.01 fatalities per 100 million passenger miles. Car 0.5 per 100 million. Plane trips tend to be longer than car trips of course. But still ... |

In LA Metrolink has about 45,000 pax per day. If they travel about 50 miles on average round trip (WAG) that's 562,500,000 miles per year. They've had 61 fatalities over the last 6 years which works out to an accident rate of 1.2 fatalities per 100 million. Not very good, but still not as terrible as one might think in comparison to a car. |

But I used 39 in my calculation so it's still a rate of 1.2 per 100 million. And a dozen or so of those fatalities were because someone intentionally parked a car on the tracks, but still... |

Well, dinner and a movie is the financial transaction that often takes place before getting laid. But I know what you mean. I kind of feel bad for the motorman, even though he always blew me off. |

I think it was Buddy Hackett (I'm not positive, it could've been another comedian) who said in a standup routine that he knew a guy who was so scared of flying he only took the train, and was killed when a plane hit his train. |
