The biggest decision of any new president's life....what rug will he put in the Oval Office.....now it's Obama's turn:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/deadlineusa/2008/nov/05/obama-oval-office-rug

Here's a look at the Presidents' Oval Office Rugs over the years:

All photos from:

1933: Franklin D Roosevelt in the Oval Office

1962: John F Kennedy's children visit the Oval Office

President Richard Nixon's office in the White House. The rug, designed by Mrs Nixon, featured the Presidential seal in gold in the centre and golden stars around the edge, all on a field of flag blue

President Gerald R Ford with his dog, Liberty, in the Oval Office

President Jimmy Carter

1987: President Ronald Reagan sitting at his desk in the Oval Office

1990: President George Bush and his dog Minnie in the Oval Office

President Bill Clinton delivering his first radio address to the Nation from the Oval Office

Personally, I think I like Bill Clinton's taste and current Geroge Bush's taste the best out of all of them, but perhaps because they are the most recent and "modern".
It also appears that FDR and Nixon didn't use the same presidential desk that they others used.
It seems the wood border around the office remains each time however.....

Let's see what Obama's looks like.....

Actually, aside from the floral border, doesn't it look like Ronald Reagan kept the main part of Jimmy Carter's rug?

Perhaps that's because the rug got "dirty" after he was in there with Monica....nyuck....nyuck.....

No seriously, yes, it does look different. Perhaps they are allowed to redo it when they are reelected? I like the design you posted better. I would say perhaps it was the angle that looked different, but the chairs next to the desk appear to have different upulstery.
By the way, it appears they keep those wooden chairs too, just reupolster them.

Here's Truman, and of course the only staple is those wooden chairs:

President Taft was the first president to use the Oval office, which he made a full oval out of the secretaries round office in 1909.

Here's a good site with some more photos of all the others too, as well as close ups of the rugs, and a history of the oval office. Before Taft, it appears the presidents used the Lincoln Bedroom. The photos are confusing, depending on when they were taken, as on this site, it shows George Bush Sr working at his desk on Clinton's blue rug. I guess Obama will use George Bush's rug for a few months also. That's what we had that confusing photo of Ronald Reagan on Carter's rug.

Hahahahahahaha!

Really, I like Bush's rug the best out of all of them. I like George Sr's too. Ronald Reagan's is also pretty nice (the one shown in the subsequent post, not the original post, which shows Reagan on Carter's rug.
Clinton's is nice too, even if very blue (minus the stains).
I think the worst has to be Nixon's, but that's probably not entirely his fault, that was "the style" in the late 60's and 70's.....one of the worst times in style.

I also think Kennedy's is awful, but that was just carpet. Again, not his fault as that was stylish back then too, wall to wall carpeting. In one of the articles it said he was "suburbanizing" the office.....

Can't say a whole lot about what I did in a former life, but the "laser bounce" trick FAILS when you have MUZAK speakers directed directly at the glass ... you get THAT instead, which drowns out anything from "room noise" ... and when the signals on the speakers vibrating the glass have certain wavelengths and repetitions, there's nothing in the "background" to recover even if you remove the "covering audio" ... I designed systems to handle that kinda stuff in the late 60's. :)

Won't go into details, but suffice it to say that the windows are NOT "single pane." Heh.

The Presidential Libraries might get the originals. From Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oval_Office):

A tradition evolved in the latter part of the twentieth century of each new administration redecorating the office to the President's liking. A new administration usually selects an oval carpet, new drapery, the paintings on the walls, and some furniture. Most incoming presidents continue using the rug of their predecessor until their new one is installed. The retired carpet very often is then moved to the presidential library of the president for whom it was made. The redecoration of the Oval Office is usually coordinated by the First Lady's office in the East Wing, working with an interior designer and the White House Curator.

From whitehousemuseum.org:

The President’s Floor
Since its original construction in 1934 under Franklin Roosevelt, there have been four floors in the Oval Office. The original floor was made of cork. However, Dwight Eisenhower was an avid golfer and destroyed the floor with his golf spikes. Lyndon Johnson had the floor replaced in the mid-1960s with wood-grain linoleum. In 1982, fed up with the linoleum floor, Ronald Reagan had the floor replaced by the same contractors who had put the floor into his ranch in California with white pine and oak in a wagon-wheel pattern. In August of 2005, the floor was replaced again under George W Bush in almost exactly the same pattern as the Reagan floor.

Apparently, the oval office burned in a 1929 fire, which I never knew about, so that's why 1934 had the new floor in the "rebuilt" oval office:
