if only I had an account there, because I don't believe that "someone called it in". I'm on the path to thinking that's a bs excuse.
Scapegoat someone else, pretend it's not your initiative.

She is probably telling the truth - if her story was unique I would question it but unfortunately it is far from unique. The photo blogs are full of stories of people being harassed for taking pictures in New York. In all fairness to NYPD most involve private security guards who tell people not to take pictures of the building they work for. But NYPD is not so innocent in this - a photographer was told not to take pictures of churches in lower manhattan, photographers were stopped from taking pictures near the stock exchange, a member of my photo club was harassed for taking pictures in central park (in that case the cop thought DSLR = professional shoot). There really is a "war on photography" going on in the streets.

I believe she may have encountered issues with some cops, but I also believe she's exaggerating and embelishing...something to be expected.

I don't see any problem as long as the police were courteous and quick. Nothing in the blog says whether they were or weren't.

Lots of people don't like their houses being photographed. Tough luck on them, but they do have the right to call the police. And the police do have an obligation to investigate if they have nothing more pressing going on.

When I was young I was taking a walk in the suburbs and someone called the cops to say they saw someone "lurking in the bushes". Well, yeah, there was no sidewalk and I had to step into the bushes to get out of the way of cars. The cops were courteous and quick, and I did not find it a problem then, nor do I find it a problem now.

The photographer states that she was stopped three times. She also implies that at least one of the officers was not that courteous.

Lots of people don't like their houses being photographed.

Then they should not decorate them, thereby creating attractions for photographers.

Photographers are just getting tired of being constantly questioned and having to justify virtually every picture they take to cops and security guards. Why can't cops just tell the person calling to complain that PHOTOGRAPHY IS NOT ILLEGAL....

Maybe it is time for all photographers to join in a class action suit against camera stores and manufacturers for failing to attach a warning to their products: "Legal use of this product may cause undue stress due to constant questioning by police".

Actually, the class action should be filed by camera and photographic media manufacturers against government and law enforcement agencies on behalf of their companies and their consumers who legally use their products. The tobacco companies did it successfully for years. The Nikons and Kodaks of the world would have an even stronger case than the cigarette makers. Not to mention the good will and bigger business it would bring these companies.

Then I cordially advise you to go back and re-read it.
And then again, maybe the idea of living in a "police-state" atmosphere doesn't bother you as much as the majority of us...

And you are basing your belief on...?

I'm not trying to pick a fight with you...I just want to understand exactly where you're coming from.
