The 7-Eleven In Astoria Is Now Open

Not sure exactly when they first opened up (sometime in the last couple of weeks), but they were open for business today when I passed by:

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

It has a Manhattan feel to it. Hard wood floors, the wood-grain finish on the lower part of the counters, and it's long and narrow.

Well, the four 7-Elevens in Manhattan don't have parking lots, as well as 4 of the 12 Brooklyn 7-Elevens. Plus, 11 of the 25 in Queens don't have parking lots either. Oddly enough, all 4 7-Elevens in The Bronx have customer parking. They are small, but they are there.

I remember visiting a Seven-Eleven (that's what the logo said, rather than "7-Eleven") in Beijing, China last summer. Unfortunately I didn't consider taking a photo of it.

I wonder if "Seven-Eleven" in Chinese is "qi-shi-yi" (the Chinese numbers "7" and "11") or if they just call it by its English name. I never was able to find out.

I don't know how they pronounce it. But I do know currently there are more 7-Elevens in Asia than there are in North America.

I didn't take these shots, but here are a couple from Beijing:

I didn't even realize that Southland was bought out and 7-Eleven was foreign owned and now all over Asia until after seeing this post. Were the stores in Japan/Asia always 7-Eleven or did they change the name after Southland was bought out?

I usually check out the newspaper selection (this store had Newsday, but for some reason, only the main section on a Sunday), the breakfast sandwich selection, and the chips and snack cake selection. Most of the above are different in each store, and definitely vary even from New York City to North Jersey to Central Jersey.

As a test, I'll usually try out the coffee. But that depends on the time of day, and what else I've consumed prior to the visit or what I'm planning to consume after the visit.

I do the same when visiting a new bar and trying the food. Always get the sampler platter. If the sampler is wack, the real dishes are too. This one joint down the street from my house called Merrion Square on 2nd Ave and 95th St has a slamming sampler platter. So good I actually ordered a burger platter afterwards and the tap beers were ice cold.

Yes, I know about the 7-Eleven opening soon near Ditmars...One thing I can't figure out: why does everybody seem to thrill over "mom and pop" bodegas/convenience stores/newsstands? I can understand preferring "mom and pop" restaurants/eateries/coffee shops since the food and coffee is usually better and/or different than the chains. And at "mom and pop" hardware stores, for example, the service is usually much better and personal than at the chains like Lowes or The Home Depot. But a "mom and pop" bodega? They are usually dark and filthy looking and offer nothing radically different than what a 7-Eleven might sell. And most importantly, keep in mind that most 7-Elevens are indeed "mom and pop" business since they are individually owned and operated by franchisees who, in many cases, owned no-name "mom and pop" stores before signing on with 7-Eleven...

Look at talk radio. Rush Limbaugh. Clear Channel has a lot invested in that format, and it appeals to an even older demo than Smooth Jazz, and national advertisers have basically boycotted the format.

It seems like CD 101.9 changed formats and other stations nationwide did the same.

The difference is that most talk radio formats are on AM across the country, and there is nothing better they can put on AM nowadays since everybody prefers music formats on FM because of the audio quality.

But Clear Channel has been flipping their rock stations to Rush Limbaugh affiliates. In Raleigh I listen when I drive through. Station ranks very high too. Same in Jacksonville. It's happening across the country. You're going to see more sports and Rush affiliates on FM.

Are you saying advertisers prefer FM, regardless of ratings? I guess that makes sense.
