I responded to the wrong post, in my reference to riding Route 15, but I see your answer in regard the Route 611 sign. It think there are a few of those in the city that way. |

I'll take a guess. If Broad Street is running north and south at that intersection, how can Girard Street be west in both directions? It should be pointing west to the left and east to the right. |

West Girard Ave. starts at Front street, the orange W denotes that.It looks like we are looking south ,judging by the 1000 number on the Broad St. sign (towards City Hall)and the S on the (erroneous) 611 sign so the arterial W arrow pointing the way it does seems OK. The 611 sign as it has been discussed shows a US Symbol and it should be a PA State symbol. I may be wrong. We will see when the answer is posted. |

My next question would be how old that sign isThe signs appear to have been installed within the past year. The street names are in the new Clearview font. Had they been hanging there since the 1960's, they would be in the FHWA series of fonts. |

Girard is 1200, and the next street south, Poplar is 900.As you look on the map and go further east, there is a 1100 marking on a street between 5th & Germantown Ave. It might be Chenango St., I'm not sure. |

It might be Chenango St., I'm not sure.Scratch that. I'm not sure at all now. Map Quest shows me something different and the streets all bend around like pretzels in that area. The SEPTA map is probably wrong. |

I'm not sure what the N and W are referring to but if facing them indicates the direction you are going, one of them has to be wrong. If the N is correct, the other sign should be an E. If the W is correct, then the N should be an S. |

Posted by TransitChuckG on Thu Sep 20 12:38:20 2007, in response to Re: What's Wrong With This Photo?, posted by BrooklynBus on Thu Sep 20 12:19:33 2007. 1200 N 1000 means you are on North Broad St., the part of it that is above City hall, the benchmark for Philly.Picture yourself looking at the Liberty Bell and facing towards the 1000's (which we determined is not there, it should say 900), Then the N 611 S sign has S the right way, The 611 shows a US symbol, which is wrong. W Girard Ave, is the portion west of Front st., on the other side of town, 14 blocks away. So to travel west the Arterial W and the 1400 & arrow point you correctly. There is also an E on the sign to point you towards Front St. We can't see the E in this photo. It's a lot easier , if we could to back away from the sign and get your bearings. The sign would look correct. Chuck Greene |

I'm getting tired of this thread.I don't even live in Phlly anymore , that was 45 years ago. The roads signs out here in Exton are easy to read. Why is our West Chester called that? It's northwest of the city of Chester. This can go on and on........ |
