I faced down an SCA today - and it was wonderful! |
|
|
Posted by Peter Rosa on Tue Jul 24 13:22:53 2007 I am on this mental high like I've hardly ever experienced before. It's a surge of exhiliration not unlike what one gets after climing a tall mountain or running a marathon. Exhiliration, and a sense of accomplishment. I did it. All by myself.I was riding in the window seat of the train this morning when a SCA sat next to me. He actually was an SCA, Junior Version, as he seemed to be no more than about 25, a tall, slender young man wearing what was obviously a very expensive blue pinstripe suit. He was traveling with a woman of about the same age, a totally super-hott blonde chik. Trust me, she was hott enough to give more wood to more men than a bottle of Viagra or Cialis. And maybe even more than a bottle of Smilin' Bob's Enzyte. There weren't enough seats for them to sit together so they sat on opposite sides of the aisle, the SCA next to me. As the train sped - okay, plodded - its way toward the city, I couldn't help but noticing that the SCA's elbow bumped my upper right arm each time he turned the page on his newspaper. Not hard enough to be painful, but hard enough to be annoying. I tried to ignore it, but finally the constant bumping became so annoying that I had to say something. Just after Jamaica, following what was one of the harder elbow bumps, I turned to the SCA and said (not my exact words, but close) "Excuse me, you keep bumping me with my elbow, please stop." I was polite and non-confrontational. From the SCA's reaction, however, one would think I had threated to torture and murder his entire family. He looked shocked - shocked! - and sputtered something to the effect that I had been "dancing in my seat" (Huh? I'd been sitting quietly) and that I had bumped into him (only once, and entirely by accident). He said more, but I put my iPod earphone back in a clear sign that I wasn't interested in anything more that he had to say. The SCA turned and spoke to the woman (his girlfriend?) across the aisle, quickly turning to glance at me every ten seconds or so. The chik got in a few worried looks at me too. He also scrunched his body against the side armrest, in an obvious attempt to create as much distance as possible between me and him. What was he afraid of, that I'd do a Deliverance-style Squeal Like a Pig routine on him? It's hard to explain, but somehow I was able to sense fear in him. Finally, after a few minutes of this, even though we were still close to ten minutes outside of Penn, the SCA and the hott chik got up to stand in the vestibule. Guess he couldn't take the trauma of sitting next to me any longer. So yes, I faced down an SCA, and won, and for that reason I'm entitled to a sense of exhiliration. By the way, there's a very ironic twist on this situation. The train on which this occurred was not an SCA-filled Ronkonkoma train, but the 6:51 dual-mode out of Patchogue (the SCA and the hott chik had boarded at Bay Shore). In a way I wouldn't have been so bothered by the elbow-bumping if it had happened in an M-7. With such obscenely tiny seats some physical contact is inevitable. But on a diesel coach, with the relatively spacious 2x2 seating, there was no excuse other than sheer carelessness for the SCA's actions. My LIRR/NYCT blog |

Shocked the dude didn't have to completely save face in front of his girl. Nothing like a BS arguement that no one cares about, because god forbid she sees.Maybe it was his sister. He tried to say more to me after his initial "you did it too" comment, but I put my earphones back in my ears to make it obvious to him that I wasn't interested in listening to anything more he had to say. There wasn't anything else he could do, no matter how much he wanted to save face. He knew that complaining to the conductor would be pointless because I had been polite and non-confrontational. His only choices at that point were (a) do nothing or (b) move. He and the hott chik chose (b), getting up to stand in the vestibule for the remaining 10 minutes of the trip. My LIRR/NYCT blog |

According to Google, SCA could mean: Sporting Club Albigeois Society for Creative Anachronism Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget Student Conservation Association Service Central d'Analyse EuroDisney SCA SCA Consult SCA Tissue Sociιtι canadienne de l'aquarelle Sexual Compulsives Anonymous Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists And that was all on the first two pages of Google. Dude, you might have to spit it out. Then again, if his girlfriend was smoking hot, then it might be the fact that he's an anesthesiologist. |

Like most people I never say anything in those situations.Usually I don't either. It's just that the SCA's elbow-bumping was incessant. Thinking back, I would guess that he bumped me at least 20 to 25 times. And there's the fact that it was totally avoidable, given the wider seats on the diesel coaches. He obviously was so wrapped up in his own hyperinflated ego that he didn't care what he did to me. That is something I can tolerate only so long. My LIRR/NYCT blog |

Besides, if I did take a picture of him as he was blathering away, he might have complained to the conductor. Who cares? Nothing the conductor can do but laugh. And he's not who I wanted a picture of. You need to show photographic proff of the "super-hott[-ness]" of the blonde. Because last time you called someone "hott" it had no basis in reality. |
