The 50-year-old convicted torture killer had requested only women attend to her in the death chamber because she was previously sexually abused — and she said that being put to death by a man would be too traumatizing. “That was her biggest fear as the victim of sexual abuse, that she would be pinned down, prodded, poked, cut,” another of her lawyers, Stephen Ferrell, said. The Tennessee murderer would have been the first woman the state put to death in 200 years — but instead she’s become the first known death row inmate to survive an execution attempt. Pike was still pinned down for around an hour as medical staff struggled to set the two IV lines, Spivey said. Pike managed survive the execution attempt but is in critical condition at the hospital — a stunning turn of events in the saga of the inmate who brutally killed a friend in 1995, when they were teens. The drugs may have been injected into Pike’s arm muscle rather than a vein, Ferrell said. Pike was more than courteous to her women executioners — and even thanked them when they finally inserted the lines, Spivey added. “Pike was not just ~~cooperative~~, but was trying to help instruct the people placing the IV lines where they could find [veins]. She over and over again said, ‘Please try up on my shoulder higher. Please try here, I think it will be okay,’” said the lawyer. Her lawyers and supporters had petitioned for a stay of her execution that went all the way up to the Supreme Court at the last minute. The murderess argued she had blown veins that would be difficult for the executioner to access, making her death extraordinarily excruciating.

I doubt there’ll be another execution attempt. Most likely she’ll be resentenced to life imprisonment once she’s back from the hospital.

If she survives that is. Word is that she's in a local hospital in critical condition with possible brain damage. I agree that they shouldn't try again. Just lock her up and throw away the key and be done with it.

Maybe they'll find lethal injection to be cruel and unusual. I oppose capital punishment for murder in general, but it's not at all for "bleeding heart" reasons. The Constitution clearly contemplated execution by hanging, as this was not at all unusual, but this novel form was absolutely unusual and it might finally be found to be cruel. The real reason they don't do firing squad is because they don't want to clean up the blood and brains, and because they don't want to traumatize the audience (the family of the victims).

This is the second botched execution in Tennessee this year (Tony Van Crothers was the other one last may) The Gov has placed a moratorium on executions until further notice.

In both cases the execution eas botched because the IV was not properly inserted. Why, because Tennessee procedures call for non medical personnel to administer the IV.

Sounds like a normal marketing decision to me. Say you have multibillion dollar sales of a drug that relieves pain. Why associate that drug with its ability to kill people? Have you ever been administered propophol as anesthesia for a medical procedure? Doctors have to spend huge amounts of time persuading patients that it's safe if properly administered. This is what drug companies are trying to avoid.

What I'm reading is that the team was supervised by TN Corrections Commissioner Randy Strada, who resigned in the aftermath. Strada is a man and this isn't the first botched execution in his career.

She was to be executed. Those efforts failed. Now there trying to save her life via hospitalization. If she's condemned to death, why not just take her off life support and just wait till she dies? Something don't make sense here.
