Does Elon Musk deserve blame for the collapse of the job market? |

Posted by Peter Rosa on Sun Aug 30 23:33:52 2026 A theory I read a week or so ago. Elon Musk bought Twitter in the fall of 2022 and soon canned two thirds of its employees. The thing is, Twitter’s functionality was barely affected, even with so much of its staff gone it continued to work just about as well as it ever did.That was bad enough, but the heads of countless other businesses saw what happened with Twitter and got the same idea. Mass layoffs have become routine. Of course, even if this hadn’t started with Musk and Twitter it probably would have started somewhere else. |

X (formally twitter) works.Those other companies, like medical billing and so forth, barely work and sometimes don't work at all. And none care. If it is about jobs that is one thing, if it is about what it takes to run a computer (they mostly run themselves), then that is another. People mistake the two. |

I would attribute more blame to Elon for DOGE.DOGE was a massive disruption of government services for no discernible cost savings. That, along with tariffs, was a significant factor in discouraging businesses from making new investments. Businesses want a stable economic climate and Musk contributed greatly to instability. |
