Put the phraseare Communion hosts gluten free into Google and you will get a lot of useful information. The answer is that zero gluten is NOT available but very low gluten hosts are allowed but have to be specially ordered by the church. There is also the possibility of taking wine only. Obviously either option involves special arrangements and requires the cooperation of your parish's pastor. But it's a known issue so if you have a decent pastor something can be arranged. |

Years ago when I lowered my carb intake and posted about it here, the topic of gluten-free communion wafers was discussed. I did ask clergy members about it and they weren't gluten-free.Others said the same. |

It may be a known issue but not a big issue since appx only 1% of the population have celiac disease. I doubt that any "special arrangements" can be made for me or amy other celiac patents since the "decent pastor" may not have any control of or be aware of the host supplier's manufacturing process. |

Well, communion wafers usually have 1.9 micrograms of gluten each, and the very low limit of consumption of gluten to cause an autoimmune reaction would be 5,000 times that (about 10 milligrams or 10,000 micrograms). But your pastor should be aware of such numbers. |

When I was diagnosed with celiac, one of the first things I was told to do is buy a new toaster. The cross contamination factor is supposed to be very strong inasmuch as the crumbs from gluten laden toasted bread could contaminate gluten free bread, thus provoking a reaction. Ive been fairly lucky for just having mild autoimmune reactions so far.The disease affects different people at different degrees. Some overly sensitive folks when eat any form of gluten wind up in the nearest ER with severe stomach cramps coupled with explosive diarrhea. |

But catering to the needs of appx 1% of the population apparently is not economically feasible. As an example, my local Walmart has about 1% of its foodstuffs gluten free, consistent with the afflicted population. Gluten free markets are out there, but very hard to find, at least in SW Pennsylvania. |

Here's how a decent pastor can help:- One of the articles that comes out high up in the search I cited says that it is possible to order very low gluten hosts. - And as I mentioned the pastor could also give you permission to take communion as wine only. |

Is that extremely small amount or wafer host an issue for people with that? I'm not trying to be snide, I am really wondering. I don't know anything about gluten free. A host is such a small thing |

But like I said in a prior post, when the endoscopy results came back and confirmed I had celiac, one of the first things I was advised to do was to get a new toaster. The risk of cross contamination from leftover crumbs of regular wheat & gluten bread would be enough to trigger an adverse reaction to oversensitive folks. Thankfully that didn't happen to me.Meanwhile, the gluten free beer out there is an acquired taste, to say the least. |

Since my priest didn't know about gluten free hosts like he had no clue. I forgot to ask if they are ordered thru the dioceses' office (and not the individual parish), which may have an idea. My guess is they are. |

The same religious goods stores there are for regular hosts also have low-gluten and gluten-free (the gluten-free not allowed in the Catholic Church and interestingly marked as such on the products shown in that link). |
