I was reminded why I don't watch soccer.

Posted by New Flyer #857 on Sun Jul 5 11:56:40 2026

During the World Cup, I tried my best to suspend judgment and give soccer a chance, watching the vast majority of the Paraguay - France game. I tried to get interested despite the slow movement of the ball (not because of the players who I'm sure are speedy and skilled, but slow movement relative to the dimensions of the field)

Not rooting for either team, I saw France definitely held possession most of the time but not being able to score made it look like Paraguay could potentially steal the game away. There ended up being just one goal by France and only on a penalty kick. I thought that was cheap.

Then there's the whole issue of game time. I have no idea what's wrong with just having stop-time when there's a play stoppage like in either basketball or hockey. Even in baseball at least you know the requirements to end the game and you aren't reliant on some judges' opinions how many more tries you get to change the score.

Instead in these soccer games you (meaning almost everyone) have to find out as you go how much longer you have to play, and then nobody seems to know when the game is going to end. The broadcast announcers' words in the last seconds in this game were almost exactly: "Let's see if Paraguay can do something here - no, the referee ends the game!" HUH?

It wasn't a bad game. We've all seen worse.

Today there will be two games that should be good.

England vs. Mexico and they play in Mexico. Riot police had to surround the hotel where the British soccer team is staying to deal with the noisy and violent crowd.

Brazil vs Norway will be interesting because I'm into height and all that stuff.

I've grown to hate the term "soccer" (made up by Oxford University students) as much as the game. Even worse are the people who call it "football" just to confuse you.

That game sucked. It's like they came outside tired and didn't want to move about.
Only the Americans play with real American husstle.

I find it cute the amount of racist foreigners online who think soccer is an American term.

In Ireland, the term "soccer" is used all the time, particularly to distinguish from Gaelic football.

PS. At least there seems to be a noticeable absence of vuvuzelas this time around. Banning them is one good thing FIFA (whose name I hate) did.

Exactly, and thank you. S-ccer cannot be taken seriously. Even yesterday, Paraguay or Uruguay I can't remember it doesn't matter were playing France and had its first shot on goal at the 89' 30 second mark which is 30 seconds before the end of regulation time. While on the subject of time, the running clock is stupid and the extra time, as you correctly point out, is random and arbitrary... and by the way the referees wearing those fast food, drive-thru headsets? Just a horrible look. S-ccer is not even an actual sport played by real athletes but rather a game with players all of who, and in this case I am talking about those who present as male, are 5'7" 140 lbs with an occasional outlier who is 6'4" 145 lbs.

To be fair, I respectfully take issue with a couple of your misguided assertions. The slow movement of the ball has nothing whatsoever to do with the quote dimensions of the field close quote but is because the players, though tiny and quick, are not speedy nor skilled. The Americans were most likely unable to make their high school football teams because of a glaring lack of size and strength and speed and endurance and athleticism and other things like that. I feel bad for the embarrassed cheerleaders who have to attend high school s-ccer games and cheer but would rather be anywhere but there. At least the high school marching bands do not have to play at s-ccer games because really what's the point? I mean, what, the many tens of fans in the bleachers are going to stand and clap for the musicians playing drums or a trumpet or a xylophone or vibraphone one of those things which you cannot hear anyway in spite of the fact the stands are essentially empty? The whole thing makes no sense. I am glad to see you took the enlightened path, the honorable path, the only path, and chose not to follow s-ccer anymore. I cannot say the same for the Spider-Pig and LuchAAA and the rest of the losers on this board.

Did you see Mbappe?

His skull continues to grow out from all the GH it takes to play at that level.

I was rooting for Paraguay for the upset simply because France is so good we want them eliminated even if by fluke.

Did you see Mbappe?

Of course not. Why would you even ask that?

Did you hear about the homicide that went down in Paterson last might? Some guy got gunned down dead with several others wounded. Tec-9 and large caliber weapon casings were littered across the sidewalk and street - I noticed the little evidence markers were red, white, and blue which I thought was a nice touch. I can only assume said incident had something to do with the extreme temperatures due to man-made global warming going on down there this week. Incredibly, the shootings did not occur on either Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Way or Rosa Parks Boulevard, an anomaly if ever there was one. As of this writing, the actors remain at large.

Born and raised.

As always, it was meaningful but not much more. I was alone but still made a piece of salmon with peas and carrots for dinner and a glass of milk with a graham cracker cookie for dessert. That was it... really just sad.

I am aware of the incident. Did you hear about the Delta Airbus that got hit by fireworks going into Midway last night? Some little seaplane just hit the East River hard and tilted over but NYPD was on the scene. I think the pilot will go on The View with a true American heroine Joy Behar.

It was important.

Blocking that penalty kick was major.

It's interesting to see a team with such tall players doing well. Height usually isn't an advantage in soccer.

One interesting thing about the World Cup is Kansas City hosting games and being the base for teams like Argentina.

Of all the cities hosting World Cup games and teams, Kansas City is probably the smallest market of all.

But Kansas City is in the mid-west where soccer is very popular.

Soccer is popular in suburbs.

Euros are throwing an absolute shit fit over lifting the suspension.

That’s what separates us from the Europoors. If something unjust happens to us, we don’t just say “that’s the way it is,” but we do something about it. That’s what the 4th of July is all about, after all.
