I was reminded why I don't watch soccer. |

Posted by New Flyer #857 on Sun Jul 5 11:56:40 2026 During the World Cup, I tried my best to suspend judgment and give soccer a chance, watching the vast majority of the Paraguay - France game. I tried to get interested despite the slow movement of the ball (not because of the players who I'm sure are speedy and skilled, but slow movement relative to the dimensions of the field)Not rooting for either team, I saw France definitely held possession most of the time but not being able to score made it look like Paraguay could potentially steal the game away. There ended up being just one goal by France and only on a penalty kick. I thought that was cheap. Then there's the whole issue of game time. I have no idea what's wrong with just having stop-time when there's a play stoppage like in either basketball or hockey. Even in baseball at least you know the requirements to end the game and you aren't reliant on some judges' opinions how many more tries you get to change the score. Instead in these soccer games you (meaning almost everyone) have to find out as you go how much longer you have to play, and then nobody seems to know when the game is going to end. The broadcast announcers' words in the last seconds in this game were almost exactly: "Let's see if Paraguay can do something here - no, the referee ends the game!" HUH? |
