Driving during rush hour: a horror show

Posted by Peter Rosa on Fri Jun 26 14:18:49 2026

Working nonstandard hours I very seldom have to deal with rush hour traffic nightmares. Wednesday of last week was an exception. At 3:32pm I left Sunnyside, Queens, very near the Hunterspoint Avenue exit on the Long Island Expressway and drove back home to near Exit 64 in Suffolk County. It is distance of just under 52 miles, almost none of which was on surface streets. Because I knew it was going to be a catastrophe I decided to keep track of my times. And what a catastrophe it was!

Starting point to Queens/Nassau line: 10.9 miles, arrived at 4 51pm, 79 minutes. Average speed = 8.28 (!!!) mph.

Queens/Nassau line to Exit 40 Long Island Expressway: 9.9 miles, arrived at 5:37pm, 46 minutes. Average speed = 12.9 (lightning fast!) mph.

Exit 40 to Exit 64: 30.8 miles, arrived at 6:36pm, 59 minutes. Average speed = 31.7 (mega warp speed!) mph.

Total: 51.6 miles, 183 minutes. Average speed = 16.9 mph.

Total average speed 17.4 mph. Could have been a lot worse. Count your blessings, self-centered one . . .

Excellent post. LIE eastbound is a nightmare.

My friend works for NYCHA and drives home to New Hyde Park.

Sometimes he calls when he clears and we speak during his drive home.

On a few occasions I looked at the call duration and it was around 01:30. It took him that long to get from his spot at work in the Bronx or Brooklyn to his driveway in New Hyde Park.

We spoke his entire commute.

Anyway, we spoke about diet and nutrition (including alcohol consumption), exercise science, 80's WWF Wrestling, politics, romance and relationships, and high school classmates.

By way of comparison, I leave my workplace about a mile from Exit 49 at around 8:05pm and arrive home about a half mile from Exit 64 at around 8:35pm. That’s 30 minutes to cover 25 miles including some traffic lights.

Working outside of rush hour is an exquisite pleasure.

Wow. I thought the 40mph average on I87 and the Sprain Brook was insane.

Typical upstate highway speed averages 65mph in good weather. Faster in rural areas, little slower at rush hour in spots and the occasional accident locations.

I don't know how you do it. Drove down once last year, ended up with an all time high blood pressure reading.

It was nothing I normally do. If I did I’d go mental.

I'll be going from Bloomsburg Pa to Montauk in about 2 weeks. I expect the trip will take me 6-8 hrs. I do this once a year, thankfully!

Enjoy the drive to NY Metro because it appears you won’t enjoy the rest!

That seems more or less normal to me, but LA's rush hours are earlier than NYC, so 3:30pm is going to be just after the start of rush hour every weekday. The crazy part is the 52 miles! Does that qualify as a "super commute"?

While I’m not the best authority on the subject, working nonstandard hours and all, it’s my impresssion that evening rush hour in the New York area has been shifted forward a bit (no idea about mornings) since Covid. It used to start around 3:30 but now it’s more like 3:00.

Oh, then it's about like here. Rush hours starts between 3 and 330 depending on where you are. In the morning it's 6-630, but earlier if you're farther out, like the IE.

THe biggest headache of the trip is coming in from Rt80 to the GWB. I always get hung up there in NJ with a usual delay of 30-60 minutes

I don't drive out to LI very much at all but I pretty much always use the GCP/Northern State. It seems to usually be less bad than the LIE.
