Driving during rush hour: a horror show |

Posted by Peter Rosa on Fri Jun 26 14:18:49 2026 Working nonstandard hours I very seldom have to deal with rush hour traffic nightmares. Wednesday of last week was an exception. At 3:32pm I left Sunnyside, Queens, very near the Hunterspoint Avenue exit on the Long Island Expressway and drove back home to near Exit 64 in Suffolk County. It is distance of just under 52 miles, almost none of which was on surface streets. Because I knew it was going to be a catastrophe I decided to keep track of my times. And what a catastrophe it was!Starting point to Queens/Nassau line: 10.9 miles, arrived at 4 51pm, 79 minutes. Average speed = 8.28 (!!!) mph. Queens/Nassau line to Exit 40 Long Island Expressway: 9.9 miles, arrived at 5:37pm, 46 minutes. Average speed = 12.9 (lightning fast!) mph. Exit 40 to Exit 64: 30.8 miles, arrived at 6:36pm, 59 minutes. Average speed = 31.7 (mega warp speed!) mph. Total: 51.6 miles, 183 minutes. Average speed = 16.9 mph. |
