I agree with ICE's mission, but like most I don't agree with how they are currently carrying out their mission. They need more nuance and compassion. The problem seems to be that there aren't as many criminal immigrants as Trump believes/believed so their number targets aren't achievable without deporting good people. |

Posted by Easy on Fri Mar 27 10:18:21 2026, in response to Re: TSA, posted by AlM on Fri Mar 27 07:41:45 2026. It's tricky. On one hand the average democratic wants to defund ICE and will find reforming ICE to be unacceptable. Maybe the best position will be to say that ICE is bad but be somewhat ambivalent about totally defunding them. But that risks having a Bernie Sanders or similar swooping in to fracture the party. |

We were fine with the INS and it was equally controversial. The problem, as I see it, is that the other federal policing agencies have powers that involve enforcing criminal laws. ICE is not one of them. It's weird to have a police agency that can detain people for things that are almost entirely not crimes. And then ICE gets to wear fatigues and act like a gendarmerie. Yes, I know that there are law enforcement agencies that deal with things that are not crimes, like the NYC Sheriff, but when was the last time you saw a whole company of them wearing masks and fatigues? The real problem is that there are states and localities that actively interfere with federal immigration law. This needs to be corrected, and NOW. And yes, abuela should be deported. |

As both major parties expand to attract people that haven't traditionally voted in large numbers, they do appear to be getting dumber. And those are often the loudest and ultimately the most influential factions. The crowd that Lucha calls community college intellectuals are winning the elections out here. We'll see what happens and maybe I'm overestimating by what I see online, but in California most millennials and Gen Z are very left and really do want to defund the police and abolish ICE. Their age groups will be running the parties very soon. |

In LA we have powerful local politicians that have called for ICE to be dismantled or defunded.
