You can’t fly to South Africa from New York |

Posted by Peter Rosa on Fri Mar 20 23:44:14 2026 A country not without its troubles, of course, but also one with a growing tourism sector. If you want to go there from New York, however, be prepared to change planes. South African Airways has greatly downsized and no longer serves the US market. Delta Air Lines flies to Johannesburg and Cape Town, but from (you guessed it!) Atlanta. United Airlines also serves these city, but from Washington and Newark. New York is, as usual, left with nothing. |

Probably half the airports in the world aren't technically in the city for which they're named. NYC sports teams are unusually located for the US. Not because they're outside city limits but because they're in a different state. |

I doubt the tourism section is really growing considering SA's reputation,but considering SA's reputation Johannesburg to New York City is the only pair that truely makes any sense. Having lived in the NY Metro area my whole life, my primary leisure interest is in Europe. So I'm glad that I live near JFK so that I can "hop over" multiple times per year without much inconvenience. The worst part is upon landing in Europe I'm tired from not having slept on the plane overnight, but then the first full day I'm all reset and ready to go.Even if I have to change somewhere it's usually not that big a deal because my hotel wouldn't have been ready for me until afternoon anyway, and I'm fatigued anyway. I'd never choose to live near ATL instead of JFK, no matter how many extra exotic non-stops they may have. You're farther from Europe in distance and you have less of a choice of airline (nothing against Delta). |

IIRC San Francisco airport is in the "little" village of San Bruno, just outside SF's city limits. I'd fly in there then rent a car when I'm visiting my son at Yosemite. |

I don't think Atlanta would add that much time to the trip, but quite honestly, when I look up where i can go to from Atlanta out of curiosity, the list is not that impressive at all. Yes, it’s correct that many airports aren’t in the cities, but in most cases that doesn’t matter. New York is different, however, as the extremely provincial mindset of many New Yorkers means that Newark Airport might as well be a thousand miles away. |

Got to look that one up. BTW I'm told that TSA lines over at Pittsburgh Airport are a manageable 15-30 minute wait max. I'd be afraid to think how long they are in SF. I'm planning a trip out there next month. Coming back home will be the test on waiting times from there. |
