Manor Deli on Jamaica Ave

Posted by LuchAAA on Sat Mar 14 12:45:59 2026

Handle "Fisk Ave Jim" posted a guess the location photo on the mainboard.

It was Brooklyn Manor on the LIRR on Jamaica Ave. For some reason, Stephen Bauman thought it was Metropolitan Ave, Parkside station.

Nearby is Manor Deli, named after the neighborhood Brooklyn Manor which is now Woodhaven.

Here is a List of subchat handles who agree that Manor Deli makes good everything.

I agree. It did when I lived on 98th st. back in the early 80s. I remember there was a firehouse and a grocery store nearby. Haven't been there in decades. Probably both long gone by now.

I do not belong on this list and I am not. I often pass the venerable Jackson Hole Diner on my way to work in my capacity as the leading male air hostess on these boards although I think someone whose handle I cannot divulge and who posts over on BusChat might be quote closeted close quote. Anyway, I went to the Jackson Hole Diner off Route 4 in Englewood and enjoyed my time eating a hamburger with a cup of black sorry Black coffee while sitting alone in a booth late at night like some loser which is what I am let's face it. I mean, who exactly are we kidding here am I right?

Did you know Jennifer Aniston once waited on tables at the Jackson Hole Diner on the Upper West Side before they became famous?

The diner I often pass is the one on Astoria Boulevard in Elmhurst.

Brooklyn Manor is still Brooklyn Manor, #37. Woodhaven's former name is "Woodyville".

It's not far from the broken glass chin-up bars in Forest Park.

I remember the quote slanted close quote NY1 article about Forest Park and the vandalized chin-up bars. It was a long time ago but I vaguely recall Will D and one Nathan James attacked you in defense of LGBTQQIA+ rights as it was related in said article or something like that. That was a good thread, that much I do know.

I have never feuded with JayZeeBMT over LGBTQQIAyMas rights. We did argue over Italian mafia control of gay bars, and steroid use in the gay community.

It was Fred G who challenged me to a chin-up contest in Forest Park, with RPanse as judge, but I declined, fearing I'd end up with rhabdomyolysis. It's more common in exercise than you think.

Then maybe it was Will D who attacked you ex justa causa. I always thought you put RPanse on the LOL after accusing him of reading either salon.com or The Nation one of those things but you corrected me and told me it was someone else I can't remember who maybe Fred G. I only mention that because I could be wrong about Will D who presents as Progressive Democrat and once posted a picture of a log cabin he was staying in on a piñón pine and juniper covered mountain in Arizona. Now that I remember.

That is true. However, I loved living in Woodhaven back in the early 80s
91-41-98th st. 2nd floor. Just off Atlantic Ave. Nice clean working class neighborhood, but you still had to lock your doors at night.

I'll bet you loved the rides on the J train.

I'll also bet you loved guessing what kind of equipment you'd get a ride on.

R-16
R-27/30
R-42

Riding a mix of equipment was always fun.

They often ran R16s mixed with the 27/30s in the same train. I rarely got an R42
My son was in the stroller in those days & used to get a thrill seeing and hearing the trains above Jamaica Ave.
One day walking along Jamaica Ave, he got a small iron filing in his eye. We assumed it came from a passing trains squealing flanges. Had to bring him to a pediatric eye doctor to get it removed. NO lasting effects. Bad news right into good news.

Liked the lower storm doors as a kid, so I can look out, bit didn't like the fact that the lights never went out during 3rd rail gaps, just slightly dimmed. Also that the storm doors between cars weren't locked open in place because of the AC

Thanks! It was scary. Effin with the eyes is full of potential bad news, especially when you're dealing with a 3y/o. Happily they got the foreign object out. Our walking time under the Jamaica El was greatly reduced after that, to say the least

Now that Manor is closing, I hope everyone on the List gets to go one last time.

It seems like AlM and GP38 are not going to make the trip to Woodhaven for their favorite deli items.

It's almost as if this thread posted in March knew Manor Deli was in danger.

Remember it well. Lots of great salads & cold cut sandwiches and heros to be had there. Woodhaven was a great little neighborhood back in the early-mid 80s. Hated to leave there but we had no choice. We lived in a 2 family house in the upstairs apartment.
The landlady refused to renew our lease because her daughter was getting divorced and needed the apartment. We just had a baby which complimented things. We could have went to landlord/tenants court and get a holdover petition to force her to let us stay there but decided to move on when our backup bid on a house upstate came thru and off we went to suburbia.
I have only good memories of living in Woodhaven (other than getting thrown out of our apartment). Good solid Irish, Italian & some Columbian unpretentious working class folks there. I wonder what its like there now?
