Baseball

Posted by LuchAAA on Fri Oct 31 23:29:17 2025

What an ending to game 6 of The World Series. Game 7 is tomorrow.

Anyway, I think there are only a few teams with national appeal. "National teams". Teams with a national fan base. Maybe an international appeal.

Yankees
Dodgers
Red Sox
Cubs
Mets
Braves

More so than the Braves. Braves supposedly became America's team because of TBS.

I don't think The Cardinals have a strong national base.

They had their moment mainly when Pujols was their big star and hitting home runs. Why do you say Cardinals?

Yup. Braves definitely built a base on TBS.

Mets on WOR.

TBS was the first and biggest of the local stations to become “superstations”. Everyone with cable had TBS. Not as much for WOR and WGN. Plus CNN played a role as they were more Atlanta-centric with news in the 80’s. Also Atlanta was good then with Glavine, Smoltz, Justice, Maddox, etc.

But all of that was a long time ago. I have no idea whether the Atlanta Braves are still popular due to those things. Baseball has become much less popular overall. Which cities are still MLB first cities? Maybe LA although that’s a toss up with the Lakers. Probably NYC and a few others. But most of the country is NFL first now.

You're right about TBS going national and bringing The Braves into many cable homes. And the money generated, and national exposure, attracted good players.

I think Boston is a baseball first city.

MLB caps are very popular because men are balding younger.

TBS is so interesting. It definitely gave the Braves a national audience But it was Georgia Championship Wrestling that made the station a success.

WOR wasn't in as many homes but still had millions of subscribers and paud the Mets higher rights fees. This allowed the Mets to sign better players and win a World Series.

Steinbrenner was pissed because the Yankees didn't have a Superstation and missed that boat. Yes, WPIX tried to go national but failed.

I don’t think your assessment of the Mets and WOR is accurate.
The overwhelming majority of the ‘86 team was homegrown talent through the farm system and drafting and the rest were trades. The one guy they signed was George Foster and he was released in August 86.
And don’t call this post an attack because it’s not.

I had to go out to St Louis for a bachelor party because the groom to be was a big time Cardinals fan. I drove. Everyone else flew. But that’s besides the point. These are NYC people by the way. I know my desk train master uncle was a St Louis fan as well. That goes back to the 40s and 50s.
And keep in mind that St Louis is second all time as World Series champs with 11.

•New York Yankees lead overwhelmingly with
27 World Series titles, won between 1923 and 2009.
• The St. Louis Cardinals are second with 11 titles, the most in the National League.
• The Boston Red Sox and Oakland Athletics each have 9 titles.
• The San Francisco Giants have 8 titles.
• The Los Angeles Dodgers have 7 titles, including their time as the Brooklyn Dodgers.
• The Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates each have 5 titles.
• Other notable teams include the Atlanta Braves and Detroit Tigers with 4 titles each, and several teams with 3 or fewer titles.

The Doubleday and Wilpon regime was tightfisted. The Mets got healthy the very old fashioned way.
The Mets extraordinary pitching got them to the 1986 chip. Not spending from tv.

I've called them "basebald caps" for a while. The totally bald guys just shave their head (and grow a goatee). The guys with hair only wear them when they want. The balding guys have them glued to their heads, never taking them off
