Retail clothing stores have continued to migrate around Manhattan over the decades: Chambers St to Canal to 14th to 34 or 59th. I presume that the residents of Fifth Avenue from 42nd to 59th objected when the stores moved in. Now they are moving on.
---
Even the onslaught of online clothing and shoe sales has a precedent, with the introduction of Sears mail order catalog and delivery by Railway Express.
---
On the other hand, when you build a subway, it is difficult to move it somewhere else. To me, the lack of shoppers on subways and buses (that is, people carrying merchandise from stores) says to me that the trunk of a car has taken one role the subway used to have.
---
Prior to WW2, I think it was common for a lady shopper to go to a midtown store, buy something and have the store's truck deliver it. I vaguely recall Macy's giving up its own truck fleet and calling United Parcel. I also vaguely recall Macy's begging its customers (during the war) to take the package home with themselves.

Sure looks that way. The retail stores are going the way of Blockbuster Video. I sometimes try to explain to my kids (all born in the 21st century) that when Daddy was 30 years old and I wanted to watch a movie, I had to go someplace called a "video store" to "rent a movie", then go back home, put it into something called a "VCR", watch the movie, and then go back to the "video store" the next day to return the movie.

My kids are growing up with movies available on their phones whenever they want them. Even movies on demand by Verizon seem old fashioned to them.

Ha. When I was 30 and wanted to watch a movie, I had to go to a place called a "movie theater."

Yeah. I saw a lot of movies for the first time on Channel 11. Way more than I rented them. Used to tape them too.

Million Dollar Movie was on channel 9, not 11. They would show the same movie every night for a week.

I'm glad the guy still has the old intro up. There was an even older intro, which among other scenes showed a pair of escalators, but nobody saved that.

Pretty sad.

People actually do their grocery shopping at Walmart Supercenter.

We live in a consumerist society.

I went to Whole Foods yesterday and Amazon logo is everywhere. Cashier asks if you're a Prime member.

I'm surprised Sears has lasted this long. I found out yesterday when a Dish TV technician came to my house to service my refrigerator (I have an extended warranty from Sears). He explained that a few months ago, Sears fired all of their technicians and signed a contract with Dish (which is losing customers) to handle appliance maintenance. The tech was given one - repeat, one - day of training for ALL brands of refrigerators sold by Sears.

Needless to say, this guy knew almost nothing and in the process of doing the service, sheared the head off a bolt used to raise/lower the casters so the frig can be slid away from the wall. He also didn't have all the tools he needed to do the service - I had to lend him some of mine!

I saw the caption. But I wasn't around back then. I was talking about when Channel 11 was "New York's Movie Station." It's related to your post because that's also how people watched movies back then, not just the video store.
