A. to Watts and also along what is now Huntington Drive east of L. A.) Technically, PE was an interurban, though they did operate local streetcar service in some cities (Pasadena and Long Beach to name a couple)Now San Francisco at one time had 4 streetcar tracks on their main street, Market St. The middle two remain today for the F-Market historic trolley. |

A. ones were built, around the turn of the century, there was pretty much nothing there. Maybe a few cities interspersed with wide open fields. The development pretty much followed the tracks. The Huntington Dr tracks are long gone, but the ROW to Watts is still pretty much 4 tracks, with two tracks for theIn the above image, the two A line tracks are away from the camera, with the UP tracks closer. About a mile south at Slauson Av, the A line tracks are elevated, to avoid a grade crossing of the BNSF Harbor Division track. The UP tracks switch sides under the station, so they are on the west side of the row. After the Watts/103rd St station, one UP track curves to the west, headed to El Segundo, while a track branches off to head further into the South Bay (Gardena, Torrance ending up in Wilmington). The Gardena branch actually has a short street running segment at Vermont Av and Gardena Blvd. Not sure if it is still active, it was when I was out there, occasionally you'd see a train out in the middle of the street, pretty cool (this was back when it still was Southern Pacific) A little further to the north, when the track leaves the reserved median for the brief street running, there used to be a crossbuck, and you could just make out in faded letters "Pacific Electric" That to me was the coolest thing (I was a big student of PE while I lived out there). Looks like it's gone now, and there is an actually crossing gate (which apparently was put in after I left in mid-1998). |

Forgot to mention, the 4 Market St tracks in SF came about because there were actually two different companies running streetcars on Market. There was the private Market Street Railway and the city-owned San Francisco Municipal Railway. One used the outer tracks, the other used the inner, I forget which was which. Eventually Muni acquired MSR (in 1947 I think) and eventually, the outer tracks were removed. Thankfully, they kept the inner tracks, even after the BART subway under Market Street opened in the 70s, which included a 2-track subway for Muni cars on the upper level. In the mid-90s, Muni started the F-market line, which used those surface tracks with historic PCCS and other cars. |
