Forgot to mention, the 4 Market St tracks in SF came about because there were actually two different companies running streetcars on Market. There was the private Market Street Railway and the city-owned San Francisco Municipal Railway. One used the outer tracks, the other used the inner, I forget which was which. Eventually Muni acquired MSR (in 1947 I think) and eventually, the outer tracks were removed. Thankfully, they kept the inner tracks, even after the BART subway under Market Street opened in the 70s, which included a 2-track subway for Muni cars on the upper level. In the mid-90s, Muni started the F-market line, which used those surface tracks with historic PCCS and other cars. |
