The headline says “driverless” even though it’s clear that there was a driver in the car (who was killed) and the article says nothing about whether the car was on autopilot when it crashed.

I agree. It is more inflammable than a regular car.

Capable of bursting into flame.

Maybe the word should be intoflammable.

Isn't there an extremely high presumption that it was on autopilot?

I disagree because the autopilot would have detected the tree and stopped, and probably wouldn’t have left the road in the first place.

So maybe they thought autopilot was on and it wasn't.

Some Pintos that got rear ended burst into flames before coming to a stop.

Flammable vs. inflammable
There is no difference in meaning between flammable and inflammable. Both describe things that are capable of burning or easy to ignite, but in all modern varieties of English, flammable is preferred.

Inflammable, derived from the verb inflame, is the original word. But because the first syllable is easily misinterpreted as the common negative prefix in- (as in, for example, inescapable, invulnerable, inorganic), the word has always caused confusion. Because this confusion can have dangerous real-world consequences, the shift from inflammable to flammable is welcome.

Thermal runaway in lithium ion batteries is a serious issue, and many fire departments are not fully trained in how to deal with them. In most firefighting, you extinguish a fire by depriving it of oxygen, but the core temperatures of Lithium Ion batteries stays so high that they often reignite when the availability of oxygen to fuel a fire returns.

FDNY has extremely strict standards for Lithium Ion batteries used in UPS and ESS in NYC, but obviously that does not apply to cars.

I've watched some interesting videos and presentations by fire safety experts on the challenge.

I have to stay on top of this stuff, I actually periodically teach some courses that are heavy in battery curriculum.

Keeps me from turning into a broccoli in my retirement years....

Wow, I didn't know that. I thought the one advantage to an electric car is it wouldn't blow up. Now that I know different I'll never want one. BTW, I know this is the off topic board but did you know the LIRR is doing a study to have battery operated trains in diesel territory?
