Thermal runaway in lithium ion batteries is a serious issue, and many fire departments are not fully trained in how to deal with them. In most firefighting, you extinguish a fire by depriving it of oxygen, but the core temperatures of Lithium Ion batteries stays so high that they often reignite when the availability of oxygen to fuel a fire returns.

FDNY has extremely strict standards for Lithium Ion batteries used in UPS and ESS in NYC, but obviously that does not apply to cars.

I've watched some interesting videos and presentations by fire safety experts on the challenge.

I have to stay on top of this stuff, I actually periodically teach some courses that are heavy in battery curriculum.

Keeps me from turning into a broccoli in my retirement years....
