Dutch Windfarn Coming Down

Posted by Train Dude on Sat Apr 3 10:30:02 2021

The entire Dutch Irene Vannik windfarm is coming down as the Dutch decommission 74 wind turbines. The turbines are just 24 years old. The industry average lifespan for a wind turbine is 25 years. Wind farm proponents do not like to speak about the fact that initial costs of a wind turbine, maintenance and costs of decommissioning currently exceed the vue of the electricity that they produce. In any event, THE Dutch will replace the turbines with 61 second generation turbines.

The industry average lifespan for a wind turbine is 25 years. Wind farm proponents do not like to speak about the fact that initial costs of a wind turbine, maintenance and costs of decommissioning currently exceed the vue of the electricity that they produce.

Different methods of electricity generation can incur significantly different costs, and these costs can occur at significantly different times relative to when the power is used. The costs include the initial capital, and the costs of continuous operation, fuel, and maintenance as well as the costs of de-commissioning and remediating any environmental damage. Calculations of these costs can be made at the point of connection to a load or to the electricity grid, so that they may or may not include the transmission costs.

For comparing different methods, it is useful to compare costs per unit of energy which is typically given per kilowatt-hour or megawatt-hour. This type of calculation assists policymakers, researchers and others to guide discussions and decision making but is usually complicated by the need to take account of differences in timing by means of a discount rate. The consensus of recent major global studies of generation costs is that wind and solar power are the lowest-cost sources of electricity available today.

Greta is now 18 and like most 18 year old girls, she is likely more interested in "erection" season

the stuff being decommissioned is low capacity compared to todays newer units .

the 74 turbines to be decommissioned produces only 16.8 Mw total

the 61 replacement turbines will produce 260 Mw .

no cancer causing and no big pile of birds

even that is not close to the real high capacity stuff, but there may be a reason for them to put in what they are using. Some of the latest offshore units from GE, Siemens, or Vestas are 12MW or more now...

"the 61 replacement turbines will produce 260 Mw"

That's a bit over 4MW/Unit. Man those dutch are really cranking out the power.

And there's way more.

Gas powered generators don't have that much longer a life, and that's only a learning curve thing anyway.

Gas powered generators also are capital and carbon intensive to manufacture. After all, both wind and gas turbines convert motion of a gas into motion of heavy blades, which is then converted into electricity. They're very similar in principle. The main differences are that the fuel is free for wind but not as reliably available.

on land the super big units are not viable , people need space too and Netherlands already has high population density. but compared to US they are far ahead of the game , compare to rest of Europe the Dutch are playing catch-up.
