it's not open because you're in a red state. Meaning communist.

The Democrats are anti-freedom and are ejaculating over COVID because they like the power grab. They also like how divisive it is.

For example liberals are more pro vaccine.

Then you hear the news reports about vaccine availability to minorities. NPR and NY Times love the race baiting.

The big problem with that is that they are sitting on all that oil. With Texas being an independent country, or god forbid, become a part of Mexico, that'll increase our dependence on foreign oil!

Not as we decouple from mass consumption fossil fuels. Yeah, we’ll need them for some time for aviation and rail transportation, the latter being more cost effective for long distance transport.

I completely disagree. It can take a single generation. Electric cars are here, and practical, and range is no longer a problem.* Bingbong is right about aviation and rail, but there’s also marine shipping.

That only requires a fully green electric grid, for which the solution has been around since the 1950s, we just have to go fission for it.

*There is infrastructure that needs to be built for it, but it’s not like internal combustion didn’t require infrastructure to be practical, and installing public charging stations is less difficult than building a whole paved road network and gas stations, which was done 100 years ago for cars.

You're forgetting one thing, fossil fuels make money, big money. As long as fossil fuels make more $$$ than green/non fossil alternatives, fossil fuels will rule. Thats the big reason the "solution" was not pursued since the 1950s. Follow the money, thats the bottom line.

Nuclear was expanding until the 1970s until irrational fear took over. And your post that started this discussion was your joke about foreign oil from Texas. If dependence on foreign oil is a problem, then the only solution is to use less of it.

1. TMI: Completely meaningless. This was the worst nuclear accident in the West until 2011 and less radiation was released than a coal plant emits in a year (coal is the most radioäctive form of electricity generation). This proves the absolute safety of nuclear power.

2. Chernobyl: I agree we shouldn’t use Soviet designs for our nuclear power plants, so we don’t. Useless example.

3. Fukushima: this one is the only one to actually impugn nuclear power in the “West”. But still, no one died, and fewer people will die (from cancer) from the radiation release than would have died had all that power been produced by coal.

Oil and coal no longer do. Natural gas won't, once you remove taxpayer subsidies.

Converting fossil fuels to useful energy requires extraction and then conversion into motion (via an internal combustion engine) or electricity (via a generator).

Sun and wind are free fuels; you just have the step of converting them to electricity. A wind turbine or a solar cell is comparable in cost to a gas-powered generator of electricity.

Agreed that you need batteries to store sun and wind, which offsets the savings on extraction. Once batteries get really cheap and the tax subsidies go away, natural gas and gasoline are dead.

It's not anything close to "irrational fear". The water-cooled technology is highly flawed, requires somewhat dangerous maintenance (in the containment area) and that makes it quite costly. That does not mean nuclear wouldn't work, however it requires different technology and scaling that too many either do not recognize or deny it’s feasibility.

It's going to have to happen a lot sooner than that. It needs to hit a majority within our lifetimes or the climate damage it's causing will endanger our species as currently arable farmlands become unproductive. That not only causes food to be scarcer,it will disrupt cultures and profligate conflicts as populations shift. We are already seeing these stressors.

"Oil and coal no longer do."

Really? I agree that coal use is slowly but surely on a downward curve, but there still dozens of coal unit trains that go thru my neighborhood weekly. As for all the coal fired power plants out there, it'l be a long time before they either convert to gas or shut down outright.
As for oil, can you back up your post that green energy makes more $$$ than fossil fuels??

If that was true, in applying the follow the money concept, why aren't oil companies jumping in with both feet towards solar, wind, green energy etc.? Pennsylvania is sitting on enough natural gas to power the country for at least the next 100 years. Theres big $$$ in that, enough to make a nice profit while expanding fracking & paying the thousands of taxpaying workers employed. Not often mentioned is the gas companies contributing to maintaining the roads to & from fracking sites, employing dozens of local contractors with that.
Point being to all this, follow the money and the big bucks(still) is in fossil fuels.

Regarding nuclear energy, in Pennsylvania, there are several nuclear plants operating w/o any problems. But with the overall hysteria (Re: Shoreham)regarding any new nuclear energy plants, unfortunately in the USA. nuclear energy's ship has sailed.

I worked for various industries, in my career as a mechanical design/draftsman. My last job in that field was with Numar, and Halliburton bought them out. The CEO at Numar in the late 1990's told us there would "always" be a need for oil . Numar developed tools to find oil, using MRIL techniques. Magnetic Resonance Imaging -Logging. Very interesting tools with a lot of electronics and magnets.

So, I'm on the fence with that "always" statement.
