Actually it's the opposite. What made America great was the INCENTIVE for one to better themselves. Such as the pioneers going west for a better life. When you have laws making everything fair it takes away the incentives.

Bullshit. The main thing that separates us from third world shitholes is that we have laws establishing a fair market. In the US, the power of the state will enforce the contracts you enter into and provide recourse against fraud and theft.

Plenty of used books still out there.

One of these books was published in the 1930s and thus should enter the public domain in a few years. Of course, it would have been in the public domain already had it not been for Congress extending copyrights.

Our country's founders didn't think so. They wrote about "the laws of nature and of nature's God", and about how all people "are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights", saying "that to secure these rights, governments are established".

There's no difference in the fuel except the form; it's another carbon-based fuel, and oil pumps and atomizers are easier to fix than automatic coal stokers anyhow, never mind less trouble with ash pans. The locomotive still looks and smells the same. Also, oil burners are a US tradition with respect to crossing long stretches of desert.

You did better than I did. Was in the Cub Scouts about 2 years (1967-1969), and never advanced past the Wolves. I guess I didn't have enough merit points or something, so in the spring of 1969, I was like, enough of this. I was in #488, which met in this church:

Wasn't all bad. I got to march in the Brooklyn Day parade (probably in 1968, as that was my only full year in the Scouts). Also in 1968 (may have been the Saturday before Memorial Day) we went on a bus trip to Washington DC. My mother had to take me to the church to board the bus at O Dark Thirty. Apparently, the car was in the shop overnight, so we walked down to New York Av/Empire Blvd (stop was right in front of the Seven-One house) and took the B44 to the church. Got a 5000-series Flxible, where the rear door light wasn't working. By then I had ridden buses enough to know the sound that it made when activated, so I'll told my mom, I'll let you know when the door is ready, and I did. I guess she walked over to Nostrand and took the B44 back home (only a couple of blocks from where we lived). The trip was cool, we went by the Smithsonian and a couple of other places. Then we switched to a cool TDH-5303A Fishbowl, painted orange, great A/C (it was hot that day) and a cool sounding engine, to go to Arlington National Cemetery. We got back after dark, and I guess during the day, my mother went and got the car, because she picked me up in it.

scouting is an excellent way for a young teenager to begin to understand various structural elements of being a good citizen. and it offers a condoned way for boys to experience and appreciate the value of strong, independent thinking.

when i was in it the boy scout manual was an excellent source of honest information about surviving in the "wild". i've never seen any published "survival-type" resources that could surpass it. as astoundingly useful as the original, thick computer shopper magazine was for nerds who dreamed about computers.

Well, that image won't make me "hate" anyone, but it does make me feel a bit... awkward. It's not something that should be published without comment in a book for children, and such comments are not really what such a book should contain either. Thanks for showing it here, though. At least now I know what the fuss is about. I think Dr. Seuss Enterprises made the right decision in ceasing publication of the book containing that image.

(Now, if the government tried to somehow block the continued publication of the book, I would strongly oppose that. But that is not what is happening. I also think eBay is wrong to remove these books from its listings.)

Sort of. A comment something like "This is a kind of caricature that people from China and nearby countries would probably find insulting. Running while eating, grinning a huge grin, and wearing this kind of hat. But in 1937, when the book was first published, most Americans didn't think about things like that." If I were reading this to a child, and he saw the picture, I would probably make some comment like that, but try to keep it as brief as possible. Most likely, I would avoid showing him/her that particular picture, if i could.

I think I did actually read that book ("And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street") as a child, about age 9, and did notice that picture. By that age, I already understood that there used to be a lot more prejudice in the world, and that a drawing like that would not be included in a more recent book.

BTW, I looked up when the book was published, and was surprised that it was as early as 1937. I would have guessed more like 1947.

So you grew up seeing such pictures without a woke adult to explain context and racism and yet you grew up to understand that the depiction was not reality. I guess some how you believe that children of today are less intelligent or will grow up to be less intelligent.
Personally, I saw pictures like that when I was younger. I also had a neighbor/friend, Nancy Kong, and I never equated her with the caricatures. I guess some of us can and do become somewhat well adjusted adults despite not having woke guidance from well meaning woke adults.
