Wingate, Brooklyn

Posted by Catfish 44 on Thu Jan 14 23:07:37 2021

648 Midwood Street is in Wingate, Brooklyn. Is that a defined neighborhood or a real estate gimmick?
On the 10 o’clock news tonight was a story from Harlem, Manhattan. An obvious local story. Is Manhattan necessary to be included?

Yeah. It's not necessary to follow Harlem with Manhattan.

I'm guessing most everyone in the newsroom and on-air was raised outside the NYC Metro area and does not have the true feel for how to word NY news stories.

Here's a link to a neighborhoods map by the NYC government.

https://www1.nyc.gov/site/planning/data-maps/city-neighborhoods.page

If you click on the drop-down selector in the map, there will be an alphabetical listing of all the defined NYC neighborhoods. Yes, there is a Wingate in Brooklyn.

It seems that most communities in the outer boroughs are identified by the community and then the borough like New Dorp Staten Island or Melrose in the Bronx. Why? Custom I guess

yes but when you go to those neighborhoods in Brooklyn or know people there they sometimes don't use the appropriate name.

Queens is like that to an extent. In Brooklyn people were not as not as fussy about the neighborhood they came from but us Queens people were kind of defined by our neighborhoods.

More than six years ago I went to a food truck event by Morgan Ave on the L train. Everyone calls that neighborhood "Bushwick". No one says "East Williamsburg".

I know. Names can get sticky in a hurry. It’s either in the 77 or 71 which normally I would call Crown Heights. But my suspicion is that Crown Heights is not as sexy as Wingate. Even though Bauman pointed out on a map the name Wingate, the same map include Weeksville.

For some reason people in East Williamsburg adopted Bushwick. I guess if they can't live in Williamsburg proper they want their own identity.

Brooklyn's a little bit different. The Dutch organized into 6 towns. Here's a map of Brooklyn's original 6 towns.

Starting in the 19th century, the village, then city of Brooklyn started to annex all the surrounding towns. Eventually, Brooklyn had annexed all of Kings County.

What's interesting about this map, is that Williamsburg had not yet dropped its final "H" but New Lots and dropped its double "T".

LOL.

It's weird.

East Williamsburg does not feel like Williamsburg.

I just remember going to the neighborhood around Morgan Ave on the L and saw a big wall mural which read "Bushwick" and I asked a few people who told me the same.

The neighborhood itself is interesting. Lots of old warehousing. Then rows of brick multiple dwellings.

no it ain't. for a while i had a job located on rewe street. just north of where metropolitan avenue and grand street intersect. it was where rewe street curves around the newtown crick. i mean creek.

sheeit. at lunch sometimes, i would wonder around the corner of the building and sit there on the bank of the creek, tom sawyer-style, watching the water "flow". if tom sawyer also lit up a doob after he et his lunch that is.

but that shit was definitely known as east williamsburg when i was known to frequent thise environs way back in the early seventies.

so, you're wrong, sparky.

That IS Bay Ridge. And before anyone argues with me, I was born and raised there, as 3 generations of my family before me. The real estate agents started calling it Sunset Park to separate it from the other side of 65th Street, as the "white people" lived there, and the "Puerto Ricans" lived here. In fact, I never even heard of the neighborhood being called Sunset Park until I was like 18-19 years old. It was always Bay Ridge, which is the name of the Post Office on 55th and 7th.

In fact, the locals (old people) called the area around Sunset Park itself as "Finn Town", because that was a local Finnish enclave around 40, 41, 42 streets 6, 7, 8 Avenue back in the day.

Neighborhoods change names, and "Sunset Park" and "Bay Ridge" are different enough that it justifies the distinction. Bay Ridge used to be called Yellow Hook.
