The "no-fly list" is itself an affront to American traditions. It is certainly not a legislatively enacted criminal penalty. In fact, most of the people on it have not been convicted of any crimes. It is supposed to be used only for international terrorists. Does it even have a formal name? "No fly" sounds like baby talk, or at least very informal language, but there doesn't seem to be any other name for it. |

Given that flying is a privilege, preventing people who are known or suspected terrorists is a generally prudent precaution. The issue I have with "no fly" lists is that they can be used in an arbitrary and capricious manner, and the people placed on such restrictions aren't able to ascertain why they have been so restricted, or what, if any, appeals process there is for getting their flying privileges restored. It is possible to end up on a no-fly list because you pissed off the wrong politician, or even the wrong flight crew.That said, anyone who took part in the attempted coup at the Capitol, is by definition a terrorist, and the government is within its rights to keep them off the same airplanes you and I might wish to travel aboard. |

Yup. They appear to have thrown promising legal careers away. If convicted, they are likely to spend decades in federal prison (I think New York State is the proper forum for their trial, not federal court. The federal case involves some unusually creative logic in order to make examples of these two), to say nothing of being able to actually travel anywhere. |
