The fake intelligence document, which had been floating around the far-right web for a month before the New York Post published a controversial article echoing those conspiracy theories, was eventually disseminated by close associates of the president. Perhaps, the far right had to go to such extremes to smear the Bidens because they could not dig up anything legitimate.

It's not saying that the controversial laptop emails are fake. Is that correct?

The only reason this evidence might be considered "irrefutable" is because its author appears to be a fake and cannot be cross examined. Of course, the lack of an author also makes it difficult to authenticate.

The authenticity laptop and its contents has not been helped by the disclosure of the lengths people have gone by fabricating the documents.

That NBC story was put out to generate confusion, because there isn't any evidence to challenge the credibility of the laptop. Even WaPo was forced to concede as much, buried in an article opining on the similarities between these leaks and the Russian 2016 interference.

And if the holders of the laptop won't release it to a neutral observer, how can anyone ever prove it's either real or fake?

I will say that the right wingers (media as well as Giuliani) keeping such a tight lid on the laptop is severely hurting their credibility - they are trying to get the exclusive stories for clicks, playing games. Right now the only people I know of who have copies of the data are Rudy, Jack Posobiec (OAN), and now the Daily Caller.

As of a few hours ago, someone has been posting emails and texts (with addresses/numbers redacted) on twitter semi-randomly in part to piss off one of the "gatekeepers" of the document trove. They basically are asking their followers to suggest search terms and sending out and emails that match. I feel like I'm reading spoilers for the next few days of news articles that places like the NY Post were hoping to drop in a more controlled manner...
