Is this going to be the new normal?Covid can be transmitted on surfaces, as well as by airborne aerosols. Single use menus will be the new normal, until this plague passes. Unfortunately, Covid is rising rapidly on Long Island. There will probably be another lockdown in the not too distant future. The micro-cluster paradigm isn't showing signs of working. |

What I find frustrating is that no one really seems to be able to explain most of the infections.Yes, superspreader events and bars cause infections. So does cohabiting with someone. But other than that, what? Low occupancy restaurants seem to be mostly OK. Ditto outdoors, even when relatively packed like a protest or an outdoor Trump rally or at an outdoor restaurant. Ditto stores with mask requirements and social distancing. So is getting it from strangers mainly due to superspreader events and bars, or am I missing a major cause? |

Not going for eradication, like NZ, Austrailia, Taiwan, etc., was a gamble. There's been too much reluctance to tighten the screws, when new cases started to increase. Also, there's been insufficient effort to prevent the introduction of Covid from outside. |

The original lockdowns were originally intended to slow down or even stop the spread of the pandemic. They were instituted and numbers decreased. Then they were eased then the curve swung back up again. Now the lockdowns about to be reinstated again. My question is if they didn't work (lockdowns) for the long term the first time, why go there again?Isin't it a sign of insanity to try something that didn't work the first time and then try it again and expect a different result?? Just wonderin. |

What I find frustrating is that no one really seems to be able to explain most of the infections. That's due to inadequate tracing. If the caseload were low, they could do a genome test for each case. Read New Zealand's daily briefings, to see how tracing should be done. Ditto stores with mask requirements and social distancing. A recent study in Boston found that 20% of grocery clerks had Covid. Most were asymptomatic. Don't discount the lack of super spreader event with safety. We just have not tracked. am I missing a major cause? 1. Are people who test positive really quarantining for 14 days? 2. Those returning from abroad or another state are not tested. 3. A single negative reading does not mean somebody isn't infected. That person should be in managed isolation for 14 days. NZ tests on the 3rd and 12th days. If either test is positive, off to quarantine and the 14 day period begins over. 3a. That works if there isn't any Covid around to be picked up once the person is released from isolation. That's why eradication is the only viable strategy. 4. There's no tourist industry. Hotels are empty. They can be used for managed isolation - they need the money. |

So when I ask if I am missing a major cause, all you come up with is travelers from elsewhere. But how are those travelers spreading it? That's my issue. How do those who are sick spread it to others? |

What is the mortality rate then and now. I suspect that the first wave of the disease may have stricken more of the weak and susceptible the first time around. We've learned much in the last 8 months and I suspect the survivability rate is much higher now. |

We're ALL going to be exposed to the Wuhan Virus.No. The virus can last outside a human for only 29 days. Once it's dead in an area, that area is safe. It must be introduced from outside for that area to become infected again. We've eradicated smallpox from the entire world. We nearly eradicated polio. |

They opened before there were 0 community infections in most of the world. The countries that maintained lockdowns until there were zero cases and then enacted effective border controls have remained Covid free. My question is if they didn't work (lockdowns) for the long term the first time, why go there again? Isin't it a sign of insanity to try something that didn't work the first time and then try it again and expect a different result?? Israel just succeeded in reducing the virus by instituting a second lockdown. They re-opened after 1 month, and may make the same mistake by not eradicating Covid. But, they proved that a lockdown will effectively reduce new cases. |

But what is the hospitalization rate then and now.The states that are experiencing high daily case rates are also experiencing hospital bed and ICU shortages. This is a replay of NYC in March/April. I suspect that the first wave of the disease may have stricken more of the weak and susceptible the first time around. Why did the number of new cases just hit an all time high? More people are contracting Covid than in March/April or May/June. We've learned much in the last 8 months and I suspect the survivability rate is much higher now. One of the things we've learned is that Covid (or the body's reaction to it) affects many organs. These effects last much longer than a positive PCR test. Many "recovered" Covid victims may not be able to resume their lives. |

And we did it without telling people they can't visit their neighbors for Christmas dinner. That price is just too high. Better to let it spread, and the population gain natural immunity. Most will get over it and be fine. Some won't. But that's life. We aren't above that, and shouldn't pretend we can be. |

Better to let it spread, and the population gain natural immunity. There's no proof there is "natural" immunity for this disease. There are several documented cases of people getting the disease twice. There is also some evidence that acquired antibodies due to catching Covid go away after 4 months. Most will get over it and be fine. Some won't. But that's life. That's your life. Don't spread Covid to people who value their life more than you do yours. |

This isn't the nineteenth century, where people had twelve kids just so a few of them would live to adulthood. We don't have to rely on "herd" or "natural" immunity to overcome a pandemic. Thanks to modern medicine we have the tools to deal with viral pathogens without allowing millions of people to die, which is what achieving "herd immunity" would require. |

I don't think most people are willing to sacrifice basically all of their free time and stay locked in their homes until a vaccine is ready, for the sake of the 5% or less who have compromised immune systems. If I was in the latter category, I wouldn't want my children and grandchildren to give up their lives for the sake of people like me. |

Posted by Stephen Bauman on Sat Oct 31 20:29:59 2020, in response to Re: Download the F**king Menu, posted by Dyre Dan on Sat Oct 31 14:38:07 2020. I don't think most people are willing to sacrifice basically all of their free time and stay locked in their homes until a vaccine is readyThat's not what's required. Once, Covid is eradicated within an area, it must be brought in from outside that area. The disease's pathology tells one how long a lockdown is required to eradicate Covid. As I mentioned it can live on surfaces for 29 days. Its incubation period can be 14 to 21 days. So, 29 + 21 = 50 days or 7 weeks of lockdown is all that's required. After that, people within the area can live life as before. Those that want to enter the area must first undergo a 14 day quarantine with tests given to make sure the person remains Covid free within the quarantine period. How did it work in New Zealand? There are There are 4 phases. Phase 4 is the most restrictive and Phase 1 the least. The went into a strict lockdown (Phase 4) on March 26th. It remained on a strict lockdown until April 28th. That's 33 days. It went into a Level 3 phase, lasted until May 14th. That's 17 days. It went into Level 2 phase until June 8th (25 days). Level 1 is essentially no restrictions. That's a total of 75 days. The last 25 days at Level 2 that essentially limits gatherings to 100 or less. for the sake of the 5% or less who have compromised immune systems. A lot more are at risk. Covid overwhelms medical and hospital facilities. North Dakota and Montana currently have no available ICU units. This affects those who might suffer heart attacks, strokes, etc. It also affects the ability to save somebody injured in an automobile crash. The number of daily Covid cases is expected to double within a month. |
