Cops living on Staten Island can be assigned to commands that cover their home addresses.If NYPD cops in general don't live in the city they police, they have no stake in the neighborhoods to which they are assigned, and therefore, no real incentive to care for those areas in a meaningful way. I worked in the 75 in the late '80s, my COR was Pitkin and Momma Gaston. I saw what happens when both the cops and the neighborhood were out of control. If more cops had to come home to city neighborhoods after their tour, they'd be more invested in the condition of the community. |

Yes, because a cop living in the 75 (yes, cops have always lived in Brownsville and ENY) would expect their colleagues who lived in Bensonhurst but work in the 75 to take a real interest in the neighborhood, just as the cop living in the 75 but working in Bensonhurst would take an interest in the 72. |

When I was in the 111 which is in Northeast Queens bordering Great Neck in Nassau we had a female commanding officer who lived near the Outerbridge Crossing. We all heard that it was a punishment. Could you imagine the commute? Probably like 3 hours in rush hour. An hour just to get to the Verrazano!! |
