525,600

Posted by JayZeeBMT on Sat Aug 1 08:25:26 2020

COVID-19 is now killing one person every 60 seconds in the US.. If this death rate continues unchanged for the next 12 months, the virus will kill 525,600 people in our country.

Yet we still think mask usage and re-opening schools are up for debate.

'Murica.

I see. NY and NJ killed off all of their sick and old at the beginning and now sit back and feel superior when it happens to California, Texas, and the rest of "Murica".

Yes, NYC was very badly hit by covid. But the article does not substantiate Easy's claim, even understanding that he was exaggerating for effect.

Stupid distinction.

Yes, a few people died in car accidents while they had covid and were called covid deaths when they should have been called car accident deaths. But the rate of covid deaths is so much higher than the rate of most other unnatural causes of death that the accidental overcount of covid deaths is minimal. There is also a corresponding accidental undercount.

The number of excess deaths above what would have been statistically expected since February is slightly higher than the number of recorded covid deaths. And this is despite car accident deaths going down because people have been driving less.

I know a couple that is VERY fastidious about avoiding covid. They live in the suburbs and only go out when needed. They coordinate trips to minimize the number of outside trips. They always wear masks and wash their hands and use sanitizer. They even remove all of their clothes before entering the house and immediately wash them. Yet they got covid. They have no idea how or when they contracted it, but they think that if they can get it, literally everyone can and will get it.

literally everyone can and will get it.

Can get it, yes, will get it hopefully not.

At the rate hot spots like FL are developing new cases, it will still take a few years for everyone to get it. Hopefully there will be a vaccine first.

Anyway, I have encountered at least 10,000 people on the street since March 16th without getting it. But I've always had an N95 mask on. So I'm thinking that masks help, even outdoors, although if there is no guarantee.

No, unless you mean worldwide.

For the US to get herd immunity, originally the estimate was that 2 million people would have died. Based on improved treatments, the estimate is down to 1 million.

Florida has lots cases in nursing homes and low income Hispanic communities like Miami Dade.

It's so fucking hot in places like Florida and Arizona for long periods and people stay in cooler temp indoor areas around other people.

Yeah, I've thought of getting a test, but there are so many false negatives and false positives, I don't see the point.

I have been feeling run down in an odd sort of way for the last few months, so I might have gotten an extremely mild case too. Early on, before I had sufficiently practiced my evasive maneuvers, I got a big lungful of cigarette smoke-laden air from some guy I didn't notice in time.

Agreed. I had the opportunity to get both tests a month ago. I got the "ideal" result of positive antibodies and negative on the nasal swab. People were congratulating me. But nothing about having received these results has changed my life in any way. I still have to wear the masks as others do and, should I at some point be traced as having been in contact with someone who had the virus, I would still be asked/instructed to quarantine if I understand the current procedures correctly.

re-opening schools

What do you recommend for families that will be evicted if they can't send their kids to school, because then they can't earn enough money to pay the rent?

For once, however, Chris is correct in a limited sense. Florida's case rate and death rate to not resemble New York's (not that anyone was claiming that they did - he was shooting down a straw man).
