The fact that the line was technically "true" doesn't make it good journalism. I liken it to striking a match and then yelling fire in a crowded theater. There was indeed a "fire", but there was never any danger.I think it is a gratuitous smear. The authors and their editors knew, or should have known, that it is a de minimis holding. The authors and their editors also knew, or should have known, that these drugs are widely available through many many manufacturers and hold almost no potential for windfall profits. Finally, the authors and their editors knew, or should have known, that a meaningful share of their readership would latch onto this line like lions on red meat. While not a major part of the article, that tiny section of the article brought lots of attention and probably resulted in far more "clicks" than the article would have gotten without it. So, to my mind, they either knew what they were doing and used the line as click-bait for the faithful or they didn't know what they were doing and didn't understand what the financial interest was. Neither is particularly good journalism. |
