The SARS death rate was about 15%, probably about 10 times that of Covid-19. (As you point out, many Covid-19 cases are going undiagnosed because of lack of testing.) |

While we should have banned Europe earlier, they got it from China, so maybe they should have ignored the WHO and banned China when we did. It places us in much better shape than most of europe, but behind much of Asia. Our response is average. Not terrible, not great. |

Our response is average. Not terrible, not great.Testing remains terrible. Here's a link to a country by country comparison. Scroll down to the table. Sort the table on the last column - tests per 1M population. The USA figure is 7,670 per 1M or 0.8%. The US ranked 39th. Iceland tested 10% of its population. Moreover, there's still a big delay between taking the test and getting the results, even with the private sector. This article describes the situation in most of the country. Widespread testing was the key to avoiding the pandemic. Widespread antigen testing is the key to safely returning from lockdown and restarting the economy. |

At the Seattle-Tacoma airport, he said, an immigration officer went through his documents and asked questions unrelated to the virus about his job and life in China. At no point did anyone take his temperature, he said. “He hands me my passport and forms and says, ‘Oh, by the way, you haven’t been to Wuhan, have you?’” Mr. Jurinka said. “And then he says, ‘You don’t have a fever, right?’” Like others, he left the airport with a card that recommended two weeks of self-quarantine and a promise that someone would call to check up on him. China ban did not work since there were may exemptions, and the Washington State strain came from there. European ban came much later and was even more spotty in counties affected as it was phased in. 0.7% testing rate per capita is abominable. |

If the ban hadn't been in place it would have been 10 times that. And it seems to have worked since the strain that's prevalent in China didn't come to the west coast in large numbers.
