we have chosen safety over freedom

Posted by ntrainride on Sun Mar 29 00:02:22 2020

and that's what is going to kill us. morons who think "oh, yes my leaders, you know what's best for us better than we do" and don't understand the danger of thinking that way are very ignorant of history.

listen, folks, now "they" know what pussies we have turned into.

blocking domestic travel...yes, master. close our public gatherings...yes, master. stop educating our children...yes, master. make sure we only listen to the "approved_ sources of information...yes, master. deprive us of our means of acquiring personal wealth...yes, master.

make sure that we lose faith in our own common sense...yes, master.

what part of the country are you in?

what political party do you support?

so many variables in how people are reacting to all this.

I know people if places like Florida are enjoying time off because it's sunny and mid 80's no rain daily. People are boating or doing yard work.

People in Queens are not happy.

Reaction varies.

SHUT THE FUCK UP!

Yeah, I’m on the verge of climbing the walls two. Most people are. But this thing is serious.

my oldest brother recently died. so did my girlfriend's father.

so what? i looked it up; according to the cdc in 2017 this shows how many people died:

Heart disease: 647,457

Cancer: 599,108

Accidents (unintentional injuries): 169,936

Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 160,201

Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 146,383

Alzheimer’s disease: 121,404

Diabetes: 83,564

Influenza and pneumonia: 55,672

Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 50,633

Intentional self-harm (suicide): 47,173

so, you knowing someone who died is statistically irrelevent...it just happens no matter what we do. but we don't stop an entire nation.

thank you. it's "funny"; when he was 16 he got rheumatic fever. damaged his heart valve.

he lived through three open heart surgeries and two pacemakers. fathered two sons (both married and both had two children), was at one point one of the only persons in new york state qualified for steam boiler inspections, worked for the city, quit and was immediately scooped up by an insurance company to do boiler inspections all over the city and long island, was an accomplished sailor and had his own sailboat, and he never left his wife.

but what killed him wasn't the bad heart. it was failed kidneys, damaged beyond repair by the blood thinner medecine he had to take.

i wasn't being a smart ass with my original post. i just object to what's going on currently as far as reacting to this disease.

Apples and oranges.

You cant spread traffic deaths from person to person by simply being in their vicinity for an certain period of time.

We'd save hundreds of thousands of lives every year. People that would otherwise be alive. Sure they may think that they should be allowed to make such decisions, but this is a crisis.

We'd need fewer paramedics, fewer hospital beds, insurance rates would go down. The country would be more productive.

We'd save hundreds of thousands of lives every year.

You mean worldwide? US traffic deaths are under 40K per year, and many of those would not be prevented if the speed limit were 25.

Also, every legislator who voted for such a law would lose their next primary, and the law would be repealed. In contrast, politicians who have closed restaurants, etc., will not be voted out of office because a majority of the voting public will understand it was the right thing to do.

Yes it does. If the OP's advice were being followed, many more similar deaths would have occurred, people would be dying on gurneys in hospital corridors, medical workers would be dying in far greater numbers than they are, some dead bodies wouldn't get picked up because there wouldn't be enough working ambulance crews, etc.

And his grandfather remains alive, by the way.

By next year our medical system will be able to handle more people needing the ICU at any given time.

Also, it's probably fairly unlikely that it would so completely mutate that everyone who gets it this year will have no immunity to next year's version.

Also, if it mutates, it might not continue to be so ultra-sneaky, whereby you can be spreading the virus for days without knowing you're infected, but with the virus still being quite deadly in the longer term. It's the sneakiness of this particular strain that makes it so bad.

Please, you exaggerate. They wouldn't die in the street. They'd die on a gurney in a hospital corridor. :(

What people also don't realize is how many people have those "compromised respiratory systems" that lead to death or permanent disability. Even a mild case of chronic asthma makes younger people be at far greater risk than the "average."

The difference between this and the flu, in addition to the factor of 10 in death rate, is that a flu causes people to die at 89 who otherwise would have lived to 91. This kills off and disables a lot of people who were really quite healthy and not at all infirm, just not in perfect health.

I don't know. I was watching an epidemiologist answer that same question and she didn't quite have your confidence.

We'll be better prepared for sure and without mutation many will already have gotten it and be inoculated. But if this or something similar comes, we won't be fully prepared unless we have 100% more hospital beds and medical professionals on standby.
