I have not been watching the news in NYC. I have not seen any similar stories in NY. It would appear this was thought out when Cuomo proposed a moratorium. Both the moratorium and closing the courts were mentioned in his presser on March 12th. |

Nothing stops an unscrupulous landlord from performing an illegal eviction. In fact, tenants filing applications against such evictions are one of the things that the NYC Housing Courts are still open for. |

Even if the eviction has nothing to do with coronavirus? What about landlords having to pay their mortgage? Some tenants my feel that they now a free pass to stop paying rent.My perception may be clouded by something that happened to someone that may or may not be related to me. This person bought their first home in their life in Compton when they were way past 21. I mention this so that you know that this was not a wealthy person. They lived in their home for several years, saved money and eventually moved to another home in an adjacent city after deciding to rent out their first home. They found what they thought was a good tenant, but it turns out that they rented to a scammer that was very fluent in all laws regarding rentals and evictions. California is a very tough state to evict and long story short this tenant never paid a single dime of rent for almost a year. The homeowner could not afford to pay for two homes and lost the first one to the lender. It turns out that the lessee had done this same scam many times before and essentially moved from place to place never paying rent. |

Quite a state California is. If you’re a low life Proposition 47 allows you to walk into a Walgreens and stroll out with $900 worth of stuff but if you’re a working stiff that lost his job due to Corona you can get your utilities shut off if you miss a payment. Something wrong about that. |

I don't think that anybody should be evicted or have their utilities turned off due this pandemic. Hopefully we put those safeguards in place. But if our water is turned off we are allowed to poop outside, so there's that. |

Not to blame the victim, but didn't this cross the mind of the homeowner as a potential scenario? I've been carrying an extra apartment for a few months, and there's no way I'd want to be in a position where I'd have to so much as nudge someone about a late rent payment or the like. In my book, that's what professional property managers are for, unless you happen to live in the kind of place where it's normal for strangers to greet each other as they walk past. |
