Posted by JayZeeBMT on Mon Feb 17 10:42:02 2020 Four years ago, Mitch McConnell announced he would not allow President Obama to fill a SCOTUS vacancy created by Antonin Scalia's sudden death. His justification was that it was wrong for a President to fill a SCOTUS opening in the final year of his term. McConnell said this was one of his "principles". Here's what McConnell said on Fox News today, when asked if the GOP Senate would fill a SCOTUS vacancy, should one occur now: If you're asking me a hypothetical about whether this Republican Senate would confirm a member of the Supreme Court due to a vacancy created this year -- yeah, we would fill it." Hypocrisy is the way of the right.

McConnell's excuse that this year, the Senate and the President are from the same party is weapons-grade bullshit. There is no Constitutional requirement that the President and the Senate must be from the same party in order to fill a SCOTUS vacancy in an election year, nor is there any prohibition against filling a vacancy on SCOTUS in the final year of a presidency. If filling a vacancy on the Court was "wrong" in 2016, then it should still be "wrong" today, and the next president, not the current one, should fill any SCOTUS vacancy that occurs this year.

Those could easily be characterized as not being high crimes. They became for impeachment when evidence came out about a blatant shakedown of the President of Ukraine.
