I watch Jeopardy regularly and participate in an online trivia league along with the likes of Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter (though I don't think I'll be going head to head with either one any time soon). I've also written some bar trivia here and there. My comment isn't political, it is about crafting good trivia questions and putting on a good television show (and I say that as someone who cowrote a trivia round once where despite multiple reviews, only once answers came in, did we realize we had a significant problem in how our question was worded and our ultimate judgement on how to score it was going to create controversy no matter what we did). This question doesn't make the cut because of the ambiguities surrounding the answer. It has nothing to do with whether the State of Palestine exists. |

There's a wiki-jihad movement that I've encountered where they will even revert spelling corrections made on their pages of fictional villages and there's nothing to be done. There's now special groups springing up to combat this nonsense.This is in additional to those old stories we've heard about Wikipedia. Like the author who corrects an entry about a book he wrote, only to be blocked because you can only use 2nd-ary sources. Which is easy enough to fix. Make a fake website and site it. |

Names such as “The Kingdom of Jerusalem”, “Retenu”, “Coele-Syria” and one of those was, indeed, “Palestine”. That is not a judgement on anyone, that is simply a fact of history. It is understood to be a name applied to the area by the Greeks in the Greek language, like English has “Germany” or “Japan”. It was not it’s name on it’s native language... Except given the influence of the Greek language and culture, it sorta became the official name, more so in the Byzantine era. A bit like how everyone calls The Netherlands “Holland” (which is the name of two areas in the country) but they go with it because it attracts tourists. |
