Bizarre EZPass Phenomenon

Posted by AlM on Thu Dec 12 18:35:09 2019

I rented a car over Thanksgiving weekend.

I have my own EZPass, so I immediately turned the cover on the rental car's EZPass so that it was locked inside its metal box.

I took the RFK bridge twice. The first time it read my personal EZPass. The second time (as I discover on getting a bill from the rental agency) it somehow read the rental car's EZPass.

Or else it didn't read any EZPass at all and billed the rental agency after taking a picture of the license plate, which was from Louisiana.

With apologies to RFK, Hugh Carey, and Mario Cuomo respectfully and respectively, it will always be the Triboro, Brooklyn-Battery, and Tappan Zee to me.

Absolutely bizarre incident. Would have made a great Twilight Zone episode.

Probably didn't read either and billed the plate

I agree with Chris. All sorts of issues arise when you do not have your tag aligned with a license plate. Something similar happened to me over the summer when I took the old VW over the Marine Parkway bridge. Northbound they billed the plate (without the resident discount) and southbound it billed the tag. Since those plates were new to the car I hadn't synced them up to the tag therefore the bill in the mail. I don't know why it didn't read the tag on the northbound trip but I was told they will attempt to cross reference plates with tags in order to properly bill you. I did have to straighten it out in person at the help center but it only took 10 minutes.

Your EZPass is also linked to a specific license plate number. Odds are quite small but people caught using their EZPass with the wrong plate # have received a penalty charge from them.

IAWTP

Also, "6th Ave", not the dam "Av of the Americas" (I don't care what the route sign said on the @#^*%^^&^& Arnines!)

I agree with the first 2, but since they replaced the Tappan Zee with a whole new bridge, I think they can name it anyting they want.

You never said said the transponder read the second time. Therefore, you're describing the clearly written FAQ and calling it bizarre.

Wilson, Fish, and Ed Koch had their names prefixed to the standard names of their respective bridges. Cuomo, Carey, and Robert Kennedy had their names officially replace the ordinary names of their crossings.

You know that Hamilton Fish was one ugly sonofabitch.
