The Dems tried a smoke-filled room and it got us Hillary. Had they been willing to cast a wider net in the primary perhaps they land a candidate who can win a general.

Because the Dems made it impossible for anyone to seriously mount a challenge less we forget about people like Donna Brazille or superdelegates who said that no matter what they are voting for Hillary. Kinda hard to drum up support when you would need to take a lot of states in landslides to compete against that.

Can't happen with Bloomberg. Remember when he ran for NYC mayor, he never mentioned a smoking ban in bars & resturants in his campaign. Once in,he started his first volley of nanny state attitude when he let loose with his anti smoking crusade & pissing off many bar & resturant owners (not to mention big spending smokers) who spent thousands of $$$ installing separate ventilation systems to acomomadate smokers & non smokers. Gulianni was a cigar smoker so he had no beef with resturant & bar smokers as long as non smokers had their seperate well ventilated sections.
Just one example that Bloomberg was a another lying conniving politician in addition to a snarky know-it all billionaire.
Now he's going to run for president & maybe turn the US into a nanny country? .
I'don't think so. His game will not play in middle America, not to mention with the far left Democrats out there looking for Trump's job
So Little Mike, I'll have my big gulp as big as I want it, thank you! Just stay home & count your money.

BTW I'sure that your "smoke filled rooms" comment was sort of tounge in cheek (w/o tobacco chaw that is!)

I was at the DNC in 2016, and I can tell you first-hand, there was no backdoor horse trading to make Hillary the nominee. She already had enough delegates a month before she came to Philadelphia. It is true that some states where Bernie had more delegates than Hillary, went with her anyway, but these wouldn't have been enough to overcome Hillary's overwhelming numbers in any case.

Indulge me since this is tangential. I cast votes based on leadership and policy but equally on character. Take the microphones and cameras and public gatherings and interviews away and both Hillary Clinton and Al Gore are/were, in a few words, arrogant and condescending. Most do not see that side. I have spoke with military pilots, as in more than one, who flew said individuals. Those two were as described not so much toward the pilots but rather the young enlisted personnel who were just trying to do their job in a respectful manner and to the utmost of their ability. A slight mark on a glass, a meal not quite hot enough, a cabin a little too cool, a sink a little slow to drain, etc. Bill Clinton, on the other hand, someone I did not vote for (character issues), was warm and friendly to everyone.

I voted for Hillary with eyes shut, gritted teeth, and a clenched jaw. There are so few politicians nowadays that I truly admire and enthusiastically support.

Editorial Note: In lieu of Bill Clinton, I wrote in Colin Powell - twice - a principled wasted vote if ever there was one.

Colin Powell - I'll keep voting for that Republican until Alma finally tells him to go ahead and run. I understand he got caught up in the weapons of mass destruction fiasco debacle mess call it what you will, something I feel he genuinely regrets. It is so easy to simply dismiss something like that with the old tired adage "I take full responsibility for my actions and mistakes but now it is time to move forward and focus my full attention on the issues that truly matter to the American people - the environment, the climate crisis, health care for all, pre-K and public education, immigration reform, prisoner bill of rights, police brutality, gun control, and economic inequality." or alternatively, to hold sway over said individual by not so much forgetting as forgiving, depending on your political bent.

Here was another well organized and coherent post by c-rtely-unext. You're welcome.

Superdelegates can select any candidate they want without having to follow who their state voted for. In 2016, Hillary had 572 1/2 superdelegates and there were 96 who did not endorse anybody. Add those together you get 668 1/2. That means Hillary could have been as much of 28% of the way towards the nomination before any state had a say. Considering Democrats don’t do winner take all in their primaries, that sort of lead is almost impossible to make up unless you win an overwhelming majority of states or get the superdelegates to flip and there was no indication that the latter was ever happening. With such a monumental head start for their opponent, no legitimate candidate wanted to get involved.

I can see that. Hillary always struck me as a little too aloof and frigid, which means cold. By contrast, when I interviewed President Obama in 2011, I immediately understood why they won the election so handily. They entered the room, shook my hand, greeted me by name (advance people with cheat sheets don't get enough credit. That little trick works, and it's worth its weight in gold), and made me feel as though I'd known them for years.

Obama is a big individual, and when you add that to the fact that they were President, they could be an imposing figure. They had a very winning way about themselves. They knew how to connect. I was only supposed to have ten minutes with them, but they stayed and spoke with me for almost half an hour. That is part of their plan, and I admit it earned them high marks from me.

Bill Clinton could turn on the charm like that, too, so say my colleagues who have met them. Their spouse, not so much. That, more than anything else, sunk them against Trump, a professional television personality who completely understands their medium.
