Good article! I've read something similar in an urban planning context, but it was a few months ago and I can't find it :(.

Chopping up teenagers is minor?

Needing a human shield of cops protecting city buses is minor?

And yeah, no stuck up snob will understand no one wants to live in a place where people piss all over your front door on the weekends.

Or when a Democrat bikes on by, punch you in the face, and call you "a dirty Jew" like last weekend.

I always went after jaywalkers. doesn't mean everyone got a summons for it, but we found a lot of wanted people that way.

Yep. Same with farebeats, smoking, littering, spitting, urinating. They could get you a nice collar, if they're strapped or wanted. The old regimes knew this. Warren knows this, but let's be honest, he ALSO knows who 95% of the mopes engaging in this are, and we can't have Chirline (sp) mad at him now, can he?

The police should focus on genuine crimes, large or small. And some of the things listed in the article (petty theft, vandalism) ARE genuine crimes, and police should not ignore them. But some so-called "quality of life" offenses (such as vending without a license) really aren't (that one actually improves the quality of life for all concerned, both buyers and sellers.) And over-aggressive policing (like the stop-and-frisk program that existed under our last mayor) reduces the quality of life for everyone in the area, by making them feel like they are always suspects, like they are under occupation, instead of like they are the real citizens of their communities.

Here’s the kicker: the quality of life enforcement in those neighborhoods in the 1990s came mostly at the request of the local residents and remaining business owners.

The request of "the" local residents? More likely of a very small group of them who imagined themselves to represent the others, when they did not.

Good point. We should ignore the Eric Gardners and the murderous problem there and get rid of all checkpoints, either at the border, or in schools and government facilities. Why be searched like I'm a suspect?

Dan, believe it or not, most of the time it is the residents of the neighborhood now, be them residence or business owners that want this shit to stop.

What "murderous problem"? The only thing relating to Eric Gardner that in any way resembles a "murderous problem" is his killing. Selling loose cigarettes? That wouldn't be a problem at all if not for the outrageous taxes we now have on cigarettes. But that's more an issue for the legislature than for the police to address.

Like I said, we need to clarify and disambiguate what is meant when people say "this shit".

We've been through this over 1000 times on here.
About 80% of the smokes in NYC are illegal and untaxed. How do you think they get them? Stealing, Assault, and Murdering clerks.

Get it through your head, murder is not a victim-less crime. Unless you're anti-immigrant I suppose.

No, that's not how they get them. By the time a cigarette is in a store, the NY State excise tax has been paid.

They buy them legally in a low-tax state or an Indian Reservation and then bring them illegally to NYC.

Yes, a crime is involved here, and it shouldn't be ignored, but it's not a violent crime. And the major crime was committed by the smuggler who brought in 1,000 cartons, not by the guy selling them one at a time on the street.

Okay business major, lets see the spreadsheet that disagrees with the local NY Newscasts on how illegal smokes happen. Because you just Kramers me into taking glass bottles to Michigan for the deposit money.

Whoa whoa whoa.

Don't forget we legalized public urination. It's not an issue if someone takes a leak on your front stoop. It actually makes the neighborhood more attractive and stops people from leaving.

My ex son-in-law was taught that there are no unimportant laws. Once you make the law subjective, then everyone has their own opinion about what laws they should obey and which they can ignore.
