Jeffrey Epstein is dead; shrieks heard from his gaol cell on the morning of his death

Shrieking heard from Jeffrey Epstein's jail cell the morning he died

August 13, 2019, 7:25 AM
On the morning of Jeffrey Epstein's death there was shouting and shrieking from his jail cell, a source familiar with the situation told CBS News. Corrections officers attempted to revive him while saying "breathe, Epstein, breathe."

Congress is the latest to start investigating Epstein's apparent suicide over the weekend, with new reports raising questions about the federal jail where he was being held. One of Epstein's guards at the Metropolitan Correctional Center on the night he died was reportedly not a regular corrections officer.

On Monday, Attorney General William Barr criticized the detention center where the disgraced financier was held. "We will get to the bottom of what happened and there will be accountability," Barr said. "I was appalled and frankly angry to learn of the MCC's failure to adequately secure this prisoner."

Government investigators raided the alleged sex trafficker's private island in the Virgin Islands Monday.

With Epstein gone, potential co-conspirators involved in his alleged sex-trafficking network are shifting into focus. British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell is one of four women accused of recruiting underage girls for sex. She's denied those claims in the past and has not been charged with a crime. Maxwell is said to be Epstein's ex-girlfriend turned business associate. Her current location is unknown.

"She was more of a partner in his obsession, really," said Miami Herald reporter Julie Brown, who spent more than two years looking into Epstein's controversial 2008 plea deal. "And there are allegations that she was involved in having sex with some of these girls as well."

Court documents from 2011 reveal Epstein controlled several apartments in a building just blocks from his $77 million New York townhouse and allegedly housed "underage girls from all over the world."

Barr also issued a stern warning for anyone who may be evading justice: "Let me assure you that this case will continue on against anyone who was complicit with Epstein. Any co-conspirators should not rest easy. The victims deserve justice and they will get it."

CBS News has learned that Epstein's estranged brother Mark was called and he identified Epstein's body. The New York City Medical Examiner's office has performed an autopsy, but the results are still pending.

In an interview with our West Palm Beach affiliate WPEC, a former Florida corrections worker said Epstein was "treated like a celebrity" during his 13-month stint in a county jail after he pleaded guilty in 2008 to charges of soliciting a minor for prostitution. She claims his cell was regularly left unlocked and she saw him move freely through the dormitory area — sometimes completely naked — without repercussions.

Note that when the State Department was unable to keep the Ambassador to Libya safe, it was 100% the responsibility of the Secretary that this disaster happened.

But when the DOJ can't keep a key prisoner alive, suddenly it's somewhere below the AG that the responsibility lies. No discussion of budget cuts that left rookies and overtired guards in charge of overseeing Epstein.

Mind you, there have been numerous hearings about Trump's budget cuts at the BOP, which have now led to this mess. This is not a new problem.

There are also whisperings thzat Barr himself was at the MDC the day before Epstein died.

Coincidence?

If we are getting into that, Jeffrey Epstein was hired to teach at Dalton starting in Fall 1974. The headmaster at Dalton until the end of the previous school year who may have hired Epstein, but definitely knew a lot of the same people, was one Donald Barr, father of AG Bill Barr.

Jeffrey Epstein is dead; autopsy finds broken neck bones

Autopsy finds broken bones in Jeffrey Epstein’s neck, deepening questions around his death

By Carol D. Leonnig and Aaron C. Davis
August 14, 2019 at 11:20 PM
An autopsy found that financier Jeffrey Epstein sustained multiple breaks in his neck bones, according to two people familiar with the findings, deepening the mystery about the circumstances around his death.

Among the bones broken in Epstein’s neck was the hyoid bone, which in men is near the Adam’s apple. Such breaks can occur in those who hang themselves, particularly if they are older, according to forensics experts and studies on the subject. But they are more common in victims of homicide by strangulation, the experts said.

The details are the first findings to emerge from the autopsy of Epstein, a convicted sex offender and multimillionaire in federal custody on charges of sex trafficking. He died early Saturday morning after guards found him hanging in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan and he could not be revived.

Attorney General William P. Barr, whose department oversees the Bureau of Prisons facility where Epstein died, has described his death as an “apparent suicide.” Justice officials declined to comment on the new information from Epstein’s autopsy.

The office of New York City’s chief medical examiner, Barbara Sampson, completed an autopsy of Epstein’s body Sunday. But Sampson listed the cause of his death as pending.

Sampson’s office did not comment on the injuries found in the autopsy.

The details add to the bizarre circumstances surrounding Epstein’s death, which have launched a wave of questions and conspiracy theories about how he could have died in federal custody. Even President Trump has egged on speculation, without evidence, that Epstein — whose alleged victims say they were pushed to have sex with his powerful and celebrity friends — might have been killed to keep him from spilling the secrets of others.

The revelation of Epstein’s neck injuries follows reports that officers at the Metropolitan Correctional Center broke protocol and failed to properly monitor him.

Corrections officers had not checked on Epstein for “several” hours before he was found hanging in his cell, a person familiar with the matter said, one of a series of missteps in the hours leading up to his death.

Veteran prosecutors and law enforcement officials were shocked that one of the most high-profile inmates in the country wasn’t more carefully watched. Barr said over the weekend he was “appalled” at serious “irregularities” in jail protocol, and later transferred the jail warden to another facility.

People familiar with the autopsy, who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitive stage of the investigation, said Sampson’s office is seeking additional information on Epstein’s condition in the hours before his death. That could include video evidence of the jail hallways, which may establish whether anyone entered Epstein’s cell during the night he died; results of a toxicology screening to determine if there was any unusual substance in his body; and interviews with guards and inmates who were near his cell.

Jonathan L. Arden, president of the National Association of Medical Examiners, said a hyoid can be broken in many circumstances, but is more commonly associated with homicidal strangulation than suicidal hanging.

Arden, who was not involved in the Epstein autopsy, said that in general, a finding of a broken hyoid requires pathologists to conduct more extensive investigation. That investigation can include analysis of the location of the noose, how narrow the noose is, and if the body experienced any substantial drop in the course of the hanging.

The age of the deceased is also important, Arden said. The hyoid starts out as three small bones with joint-like connections but hardens during middle age into a u-shape that can break more easily.

“If, hypothetically, the hyoid bone is broken, that would generally raise questions about strangulation, but it is not definitive and does not exclude suicidal hanging,” he said.

A handful of studies conducted over the past decade have produced conflicting results about the likelihood of a hyoid break in a suicide. In a study of 20 suicidal hangings in Thailand, published in 2010, one fourth of the men who hanged themselves had broken hyoids. In a larger study of suicidal hangings of young-adults and middle-aged people in India, conducted from 2010 to 2013, hyoid damage was found in just 16 of 264 cases, or six percent. The study addressed the discrepancies in academic reviews, saying wide variations in findings of hyoid breaks are “possibly due to factors like age of the victim, weight of the victim, type of suspension and height of suspension.”

This gets crazier by the day. A *true* "hangman's fracture", which stops breathing instantly, involves the high cervical vertebrae, C2, C3, and C4. If the spinal cord is transected that high up, death is immediate. This kind of fracture is almost always associated with a correctly fashioned noose and a fall.

In Epstein's case, one of two things is possible: either he tied a bedsheet or a garment to a bedframe or doorknob, knelt down, leaned forward, and strangled to death, or someone choked the life out of him. Whichever it was, it was airway compression that killed him, not a true hanging.

Still, I'm having a hard time believing that the same prison that successfully held El Chapo, one of the slipperiest gangsters of modern times, could botch the custody of another high-profile inmate so thoroughly. That just doesn't add up.

I lost my birth mom in 1958, She snuck down to the basement while my dad and I were sleeping, wrote 2 suicide notes, and hung herself with a heavy rope from a gas pipe. We found her hanging, and the ambulance rushed her to the hospital, where she expired.

Jeffrey Epstein is dead; was removed from suicide watch by “doctoral-level psychologist”

DOJ: Epstein was removed from suicide watch after being cleared by psychologist

By Tal Axelrod
08/23/19 07:16 PM EDT
The Department of Justice (DOJ) on Friday disclosed that disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein was removed from suicide watch in July after being cleared by a psychologist, the latest detail on the handling of Epstein before his death in a federal jail.

The DOJ disclosed the detail in a letter to lawmakers after the leaders of the House Judiciary Committee demanded answers to a series of questions about Epstein’s death in federal custody as he awaited trial on sex trafficking and abuse charges.

Epstein was jailed at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan when New York City’s chief medical examiner later determined he killed himself. Lawmakers demanded answers over the death, wondering why Epstein was not being more closely observed after initially being placed on suicide watch in July when he was found with marks on his neck.

“With regard to Mr. Epstein, the Department can confirm that Mr. Epstein was placed on suicide watch in July. Mr. Epstein was later removed from suicide watch after being evaluated by a doctoral-level psychologist who determined that a suicide watch was no longer warranted,” Assistant Attorney General Boyd wrote in a letter to Reps. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.) and Doug Collins (R-Ga.), the chairman and ranking member of the Judiciary panel.

The letter was dated Thursday and released by the DOJ on Friday.

Boyd was responding to a letter Nadler and Collins had sent the department with a list of 23 questions, including those regarding the agency’s suicide prevention policies.

Boyd clarified that all inmates are interviewed within 24 hours of arriving at a federal prison and that mental health treatment is provided regardless of an inmate’s custody placement, adding that psychologists are available during working hours and on call during nights.

Besides the questions over if Epstein should have been on suicide watch, reports have surfaced regarding abnormalities in how he was observed, including one saying guards in Epstein’s unit fell asleep and failed to check on him for roughly three hours during the time when he is believed to have hanged himself.

Barr said he was “appalled” and “angry” over the circumstances surrounding Epstein’s death and directed the FBI and the Justice Department Inspector General to investigate the suicide.

“The Department and the Bureau [of Prisons] take seriously the responsibility to ensure the safety and security of all inmates in the custody of the Bureau,” Boyd wrote. “We are committed to working diligently to investigate this matter fully and the Department may be in a position to provide additional information at a later date as appropriate.”
