Jeffrey Epstein, accused sex trafficker, dies by suicide: Officials

Jeffrey Epstein, the disgraced millionaire who was facing federal sex trafficking charges, died by suicide Friday night in his Lower Manhattan jail cell, three law enforcement officials told ABC News.

The exact timing and circumstances were not immediately clear.

Epstein, 66, was set to stand trial next year for allegedly sexually abusing dozens of minor girls in New York and Florida.

His death came less than three weeks after he was found unresponsive in his cell at Metropolitan Correctional Center in Lower Manhattan, with marks on his neck that appeared to be self-inflicted, sources told ABC News.

He had been on suicide watch since the July 23 incident.

Epstein was arrested on July 6 for alleged sex trafficking of minor girls at his Upper East Side mansion and his home in Palm Beach, Florida. Some of the charges date back to the early 2000s.

Epstein, 66, pleaded not guilty to the charges. He faced up to 45 years in prison if convicted.

His alleged crimes were thrown back into the spotlight amid renewed scrutiny of the plea deal Epstein reached with the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Miami in 2007, led by then-U.S. Attorney Alexander Acosta. A non-prosecution agreement allowed Epstein, a hedge-fund manager, to plead guilty to two state charges and avoid federal charges for an allegedly broad pattern of similar sexual misconduct. He would serve just 13 months of an 18-month sentence in county jail in Florida.

The victims in that case were not made aware of the negotiations for nearly a year after the agreement was signed, according to their attorney.

The deal is currently under review by the Justice Department’s Office of Professional Responsibility. Acosta was serving as President Trump's Labor Secretary amid the controversy over his role in the deal. He later resigned from that position.

I expected him to die before trial. I don't think there was any major conspiracy, but I do think they were quietly lax in supervising him. No one really wanted to go to trial in this steaming shitpile of a messy case. Epstein was allowed to die.

A person like Epstein, who lived a life of immense wealth and power, suddenly finding himself on Hell's front porch, could not withstand the psychological trauma the recent turn of events in his life took.

No suprises here.

I agree. I think it was suicide assisted by law supervision.

I have never actually wished anyone dead, even people who personally screwed me over.

That said, I'm indifferent to his death. I can't say RIP, he had his fun in life and didn't have the courage to face the music.

Nor would I have trusted anything he might have said; it would have been used to get his best deal.

In fact, his death helps people like you, who now feel even freer to "fill in the blanks."

Not so sure about that. Roy Moore lost to Doug Jones because of accusations involving minors. A portion of Trump’s base will absolve Trump of almost anything, but sex with minors appears to cross the line.

He tweeted "predictably ... Russian" which could have meant a deep state kind of thing rather than literally the Russians. That is, an analogy to Russia, where suicides in jail are never to be taken at face value.

But still, his tin foil must be wearing thin.

I don't think Trump actually has the contacts to make such a thing happen. He might know some Mafia people from way back when, but he couldn't trust them. And the FBI? Chock full of honest people. How would he find a reliably dishonest agent? They're there but they don't advertise their services.

You don't think Trump doesn't know the same people the Clintons would use? Whomever would be doing this will want to have protection from Republicans prosecuting the death of Jeffrey Epstein so will want some high level assurances. I am sure the Republicans would love someone squealing on the Clintons.

It wouldn't be difficult at all for Trump, as President, to arrange Epstein's death. Trump is nominally in charge of the DOJ, of which the Bureau of Prisons is part. In the prison system, the guards rule absolutely. It's common for inmates to be beaten up one side and down the other for pissing a C.O. off, and they are warned that asking for medical will result in assault charges and immediate transfer to solitary confinement for a long term stay. The inmates learn very quickly who has absolute power in a prison.

Given that, it wouldn't be a great stretch to imagine that the right group of special operations officers was brought in to caulk Epstein's behind, and dispatch him to the hereafter. Every aspect of his death can be cleaned up, and trust me, that EMS crew which brought him to NYDH, was given clear, unequivocal advice and counsel about what to put on their ACR. His demise will be ruled suicide, even if he has TWO bullet holes in his head, or ligature marks damn near decapitation.

None of this is particularly difficult, or beyond Trump. Just sayin'...
