Re: Cuomo reportedly pleaded Bezos to bring Amazon HQ2 back to NYC

Maybe not but it’s an odd position. She would evidently prefer more lower paying jobs as opposed to more higher paying ones. Or more government jobs which is probably what she really prefers. That way people can have their salaries subsidized by taxpayers. But that may not be sustainable long term.

AOC supports housing that is affordable and concomitant with realistic wages. You know, the whole "being able to live in or near the city where you work" thing.

I support the whole "live where you can afford thing".

Many New Yorkers have done that until their building gets vacated and they can't afford the neighborhood any more.

So now the place you can afford is a 2 hour commute from your job.

Wages generally used to support living reasonably close to your job. The entire concept of having things like subway systems in big cities is based on this. Today, wages in many cases are far behind the cost of living in too many places. See: San Francisco, for an example of that.

Why things are no longer like that is such a complicated subject and a subject where I'm far from an expert. But I do like to think that I assess things logically. What comes to mind is that the very of nature of jobs and what skills are valued by employers has changed drastically. People that have not prepared themselves for this type of workforce either academically or learning a valued skill or trade are going to struggle economically. It's no one's fault, but being a barista or even a teacher isn't going to make you wealthy and everyone that has entered those careers is aware.

Also, cities have become more desirable than maybe ever before. People with means want to live there. There are more people with money that want to live in places like NYC and San Francisco than ever before and they are squeezing out people with more limited means.

Lastly, these low paying jobs would pay more in cities if workers stopped figuring out ways to make them work by doing things like living in cramped conditions or commuting for long distances. It's hard to argue that employers should pay more when there are so many willing to work for less.

Your last paragraph only makes sense if you assume that the unskilled workers should otherwise be willing to relocate to another city.

If an unskilled worker can't afford to live the lifestyle that they want in NYC what options do they have besides relocating?

They should relocate. I’m not disagreeing with that.
