I dunno, every day that goes by without Amazon announcing a replacement 2nd HQ, I wonder more if they realized they didn't need 2 facilities and scapegoated NY to save face. I find it difficult to believe that they would announce cancellation without a backup plan. |

It's not black and white.Giannaris was probably over-aggressive. But wouldn't The Donald have said that's how you have to be when you're negotiating NYC real estate deals? Giannaris didn't say no, he just said let's talk. Amazon was a bunch of snowflakes. They've never seen an aggressive city before and they didn't know how to handle it. So they bailed. |

The version I heard was that Gianaris wasn't returning Amazon's phone calls, or maybe it was Cousins. But who knows what really went on. Anyway NYC has put the UnWelcome Mat for any future corporate expansion into NYC.It's also starting to look like Amazon may shutter the S.I. distribution facility if the employees there vote to unionize. No Amazon distribution center in the US has ever unionized. If Amazon pulls out of that facility (they are tenants in Matrix Park) then I Ikea may cancel their plans to build a distribution center in Matrix Park. |

There actually is a serious case to be made as to why NYC should have been bribing Amazon to locate a big building in NYC. But you don't even know how to make it.And you also can't explain why it's OK for Amazon to be an ultra-tough negotiator but not for Giannaris to be one. |

Different people with a voice in the matter had different opinions as to how much ground Amazon should give. Some of the New Yorkers probably were way too aggressive. But it's plainly in the news that Amazon walked away from the negotiations. NYS and NYC didn't tell them no. Individual NYC politicians who didn't have the power to make the decision said they were opposed. What else is new? Nothing ever gets 100% approval in NYC. |

NYC made one and amazon accepted.DeBlasio didn't have the power to make a binding offer on behalf of NYC. All he could do was say is "This is our offer; if you accept I will work as hard as I can for approval." Are you suggesting that Amazon's lawyers didn't properly check out the powers vested in the Mayor of the City of New York? |

Here is what the law provides for NYC commercial real estate tax abatements.Amazon clearly needed a special law to be passed. The Mayor doesn't pass laws; the City Council passes laws and the Mayor signs them. Do you think the Mayor and Governor don't know that? Similarly if the state was providing any special state tax abatements not available to any schlub of a company; they need to be passed by the legislature and signed by the governor. Do you really think Amazon's lawyers didn't know that the Amazon deal needed approval by the applicable legislatures? |
