Texas county GOP set to vote this week to remove leader because he is Muslim

Texas county GOP set to vote this week to remove leader because he is Muslim

In fairness, this is local Trumpists and not the national GOP as Ted Cruz and George P. Bush are defending Dr. Shafi.

Yes. Looks like Cruz and Bush still support the former Republican Party over the Trump Party from time to time.

That's the crux of the matter. They don't feel a Muslim should represent so many Christians.

I think its bigoted to think that someone who observes Religion A can't represent the secular interests of people who observe Religion B simply by dint of that observer not being a follower of Religion B.

I experienced a very similar fight years ago in my school district on Long Island. Whereas the district at one time had many thousands of public schools students and relatively few private school students, over the years the demographics changed and the private school students outnumbered the public school students by a very good margin. Due to numerous considerations, the parents of private school students began to run for positions on the public school board and again, due to the change in demographics, the private school parents won.

Thereafter began a slew of legal proceedings by the public school parents who sued to get the private school parents off the school board because, as they had no children in the public school, were not capable of governing the public school students and in fact had no right to do so. There were also nefarious accusations against the private school parents, such as the accusation that the private school parents would intentionally dismantle the public school system in the district to free up resources for the private schools.

Of course, none of the lawsuits ever got beyond the pleadings stage. The lawsuits were all thrown out on civil rights grounds, i.e., that any taxpayer had the right to seek a position to control where his tax money is going, and that without specific proof of wrongdoing, removal of the private school parents would be unconstitutional.

That was a very distasteful fight and I imagine this one would be too. Of course, if we're talking about that Tlaib gal I would be for removal.

There were also nefarious accusations against the private school parents, such as the accusation that the private school parents would intentionally dismantle the public school system in the district to free up resources for the private schools.

The awkward situation comes when the nefarious accusations are actually true. At certain locations and times in the United States, such accusations have been true. At other times they have not been true.

The cure of course is not to prohibit non-public-school parents from being on the school board. The cure is monitoring what they do to make sure they are acting in the best interests of the public school students, and suing them if they demonstrably aren't.

One does not need to look far for a counter-example. Only to Orange County and the East Ramapo School District.

Won't find myself saying this much but good for Ted Cruz and George Bush. Hope they convince their fellow GOP'ers. And I guess that Muslim GOPer hasn't been paying attention to the Islamophobic direction 'his party' is moving in.

I am glad that sanity prevailed although the percentage that O’Brien got is still higher than it should be. Anyone who supported his ouster because of his religion should resign. It is one thing if you believed that the candidates he backed were not good, but his religious beliefs should have played no role.

He's calling RINOs "sane". Not that he never did.

Shahid wrote the following in an open letter, which, interestingly enough, is preceded with another open letter that contains Democratic Party rhetoric in its title.
Here are the facts. I have never had any association with the Muslim Brotherhood nor CAIR nor any terrorist organization. I believe that the laws of our nation are our Constitution and the laws passed by our elected legislatures — I have never promoted any form of Sharia Law. I fully support and believe in American Laws for American Courts. I support our Second Amendment rights unconditionally, and I believe in the sanctity of life from conception onwards. I believe in small government, lower taxes, individual responsibility, religious freedom, school choice, energy independence, rule of law, and secure borders. For five years in a row, as a City Councilman, I have voted to reduce property taxes in Southlake. I also support Israel’s right to exist. … I am honored to be an American and a Republican. …
That can make him a target for terrorists now, since he just committed major heresy in their eyes.

Of course they are being monitored, by the Superintendent of the NYS Department of Education. There has never been a scintilla of evidence of illegality. Public school parents and others simply refuse to face the hard facts about changing demographics. When I lived in the Morris Heights section of the Bronx, there were synagogues everywhere. There are none now.

But the cure REALLY is for members of the school board to act in the interests of ALL of the children under their jurisdiction, not just the ones who attend public schools. Private school parents pay the same taxes as everyone else and are entitled to the same benefits.
