I think its bigoted to think that someone who observes Religion A can't represent the secular interests of people who observe Religion B simply by dint of that observer not being a follower of Religion B.

I experienced a very similar fight years ago in my school district on Long Island. Whereas the district at one time had many thousands of public schools students and relatively few private school students, over the years the demographics changed and the private school students outnumbered the public school students by a very good margin. Due to numerous considerations, the parents of private school students began to run for positions on the public school board and again, due to the change in demographics, the private school parents won.

Thereafter began a slew of legal proceedings by the public school parents who sued to get the private school parents off the school board because, as they had no children in the public school, were not capable of governing the public school students and in fact had no right to do so. There were also nefarious accusations against the private school parents, such as the accusation that the private school parents would intentionally dismantle the public school system in the district to free up resources for the private schools.

Of course, none of the lawsuits ever got beyond the pleadings stage. The lawsuits were all thrown out on civil rights grounds, i.e., that any taxpayer had the right to seek a position to control where his tax money is going, and that without specific proof of wrongdoing, removal of the private school parents would be unconstitutional.

That was a very distasteful fight and I imagine this one would be too. Of course, if we're talking about that Tlaib gal I would be for removal.
