Re: Ocasio-Cortez suggests raising taxes 70%

I will try and explain it as best as I can so you are not baffled.

Every person needs a certain amount of money to live. Figure they need roughly $200/week for rent, $100/week for groceries and other food, $20/week for utilities, $75/week for public transportation, $100/week for miscellaneous that is $495/week not including health insurance or luxuries like a car. That means that a person will need $25,740 per year in order to live.

For the person making $20,000/year that 10% tax is disaster because now they have to find a way to cut $7,740.00 per year from their budget just to live. On the other hand, your millionaire having the same 10% tax the $900,000 he/she now has does not mean that anything needs to be cut.

Yes. There were other factors contributing to America's economic growth back then, but the high marginal tax rates were not deleterious to that growth, and the subsequent tax cuts were not helpful to the middle class.

Have you heard of incremental tax rates?

They would pay 70% of their income from 10 million to 11 million, not 70% of the first 10 million.

PS. I agree 70% is too high even for an incremental top rate, in large part because of all the other taxes. But it's not as you portray it.

LOL! You have no clue as to how progressive taxation works, do you? What's the rate for under 10 million? That's what someone making $10 mil would pay on that income level, At $10M, they pay 70% FROM that point to the max of their income. So if they make $15M, only that LAST $5M is taxed at 70%. At that point, it's money they'd never notice anyway. This flies right over your head?

Why not? In the Fifties, the top tax rate on the wealthiest 10% was 90%. The rich who were taxed at that rate didn't go to the poor house behind it, and the money the government got financed big public works projects and made the middle class possible.

Thank you for clarifying in part. I still feel that has the problem that many will see tax increases because currently below a certain amount effective tax rate is zero. Those who can't afford food, shelter, transportation before your flat tax will struggle even more now that they agree taxed. Also does salary include income from all sources like partnerships and trusts even if they are not a salary in the literal sense?
